Unrelated to law, but need some advice on how to help a friend. One of my best friend’s dad is in the hospital in really bad shape. She’s home with her mom and siblings. I want to send food or do something for them, especially since they just found out they may have been exposed to covid when visiting their dad at the hospital (not by their dad), and they have to quarantine for 2 weeks. If I were closer I’d make food and drop it off, but they’re 200 miles away. Any ideas?

That’s so thoughtful! A lot of food delivery services (Uber Eats, Door Dash, etc.) will let you order food to any address and, depending on the restaurant, will let you preset a delivery time. We ordered food for my in-laws’ anniversary that way from several states away. Alternatively, you can always find a local restaurant that delivers and order by phone. Wishing your friend’s dad a fast recovery!

I never want to put the burden on someone to respond in a time like this, but I had a similar situation once. I texted them and said “what is your favorite meal at your favorite restaurant, if you don’t tell me I’ll send you burgers from xyz for dinner tonight.” They seemed to really appreciate that. You could also send them a Grubhub/door dash gift card, but I wanted to order for them so they didn’t have to do anything.

This is so thoughtful. No wrong answers here. I’d see if you can send something that can cover several meals and is more breakfast / lunch oriented because those keep better and are better for mixing and matching. Think pre-made quiches, pastries, bagels and schmear, granola, etc. Feel like that will be easier to find and put together. Another great option is something like www.mouth.com, which lets you put together a fun basket of craft snacks and treats. Maybe as a final option, you could look into a Hello Fresh type service that sends pre-packaged / pre-set meals and send them a few meals.

This is great, thank you! I sent bagels this morning and they seemed super appreciative, I’ll keep doing stuff along these lines.

Does she or her family have any nearby favorite restaurants? You could either order online to deliver to them, or see if they offer gift cards. If you know a bunch of her family members or other friends who want to help out, you could start a meal train for digital gift cards to local restaurants and such.

I sent grubhub gift cards to my best friend in MD (I'm in CO) earlier in the pandemic when her son was in NICU. She said it was the most helpful non-physical help they got.

I have never been to her hometown and I don’t know anything abt restaurants up there unfortunately :(

You’re a good friend. I’d say a restaurant gift card or even Amazon and nice note that you’re there for them and wish you could give a hug or be there in person

So I was hired exactly 2 months prior to this covid epidemic and as a result it has made learning how to be a lawyer quite a rollercoaster. I’m trying to learn how things are supposed to be but in all actuality, I’m having to be flexible and figure out how things are working at the moment...which is fine, but it’s hard to predict much of anything when you have nothing to compare it to. Being a law student and interning is nothing compared to practicing. Any advice!?

Hi ladies. I need some advice. I'm currently out on maternity leave, to return in about a month. I was just informed my male counterpart in my department will be getting a promotion by our new boss. This is really a slap in the face considering I've been trying to fight for equal pay since last year when I found out another (former) male counterpart of mine was making 40k more than me. What would you do in my situation? Demand to know why I wasn't considered? Leave?

Random thought... My gay male context plus the pandemic has amplified the "this isn't worth it" view of my unbalanced work life balance. I am never going to have kids and don't need to keep grinding for the next promotion etc. like my head of household peers with children. Do you feel the non-traditional household / income demands that LGBTQIA+ we live with are making you more easily say "enough is enough" with work as the valuation of our time has increased during the pandemic? 🤔
