USD is appreciating at a rate of 10% every year. Do you think it is still beneficial to transfer our saving to India?

The fact that 1USD = INR 45 ten years back and it’s at INR 75 today means the rupee depreciated by a solid 66% in this 10 year timeframe. Any investments you made back in India in 2010 will have to have grown by 66% over 10 years just to BREAK EVEN. On top of it there are things like taxes, CA fees, transfer commissions, volatility of an emerging market etc. and the uncertainty of not having the money at your ready disposal if you decide to stay in the US. It’s also a bit of a process to repatriate and of course you could have better invested that money in the US during the same time. Talking from personal experience. One exception could be buying a home for yourself/family that you will end up using (not rental) cause it’s more of an emotional decision and not always a financially rational one.

Given the continued devaluation of INR : USD exchange rate, I don’t think so? Happy to hear other opinions if I’m misinformed

Unless you are going to spend money in India it's pointless. The currency arbitrage doesn't work in today's globalized world.

Hmm tell me if I am thinking about it incorrectly or if my numbers are incorrect- 10 year inv period Open a fixed deposit at ~8% Currency depreciations ~66% But growth of your compounded inv is 1.08^10 = 2.158 ~ 116% growth (seniors) 1.055^10 = 1.708 ~ 71% growth (breakeven kinda) ?? Still seems okay to me

FD rates at reputable nationalized banks are much lower than 8% now. I’d say closer to 6% (slightly more for senior citizens). With a 6% compound over 10 years, you’ll get 79% total return. Also don’t forget that once you are a US resident alien for tax purposes (happens usually in 2nd calendar year of H1B), you’ll owe taxes to US on your global income. If all the math is still appealing to you, go for it. Experience is the best teacher, so mistakes are fine but manage the scale of them.

I wouldn’t send now or even in near future. India has no reason to keep the currency from devaluing with oil prices tanking. I did spend money home for last four years and have a FD maturing almost every week when the price stayed around 70. Bought stocks in India last year and planning to buy more this year. Also, paid for other expenses and it has become a solid fund for me. Good investment all in all.
