Vaccine & Normalcy are on the horizon. Where would you rather live post covid: NYC, LA, Austin, Chicago, Portland or other?

Chicago, my favorite city in the world. Take it for the quality of life. Is it the best city in the ad world - no. But I work to live, not live to work.

At least you’re excited by your city. That’s great.

I like the NYC area in general. I’m a sucker for New England especially. LA is the only other place I’d consider, but my network, friends, and family are here and that makes it tough to leave.

Vaccine & Normalcy sounds like a new indie agency.

likefunny

I thought all new agencies had to have an incomprehensible, 12-letter acronym for a name. Spain or Portugal for me.

this thread feels overly optimistic to me

nyc. never left. no other city compares (in the u.s. - plenty of better european ones).

I lived in CDMX for 5 years. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like it. I met my wife there and I miss the city a lot, but came back to the states for 2 reasons: 1) crime and violence were getting hard to live with. Even if nothing happens to you, just knowing that it very easily could, makes for a very stressful existence. 2) It’s cool if you’re single or have no kids, but it’s no place to raise a family. Also, while you can make a good living in advertising, it doesn’t compare to what you can achieve financially stateside.

Live in Chicago right now and love it ... but have always dreamed about Portland too. So one of those two.

Have been here for a few years. Ready to try other places in North America. Mostly for quality of life.

NYC. Get here before the rush and lock km a cheaper lease.

Austin is by the far the best choice financially. NYC is dead for at least 10 years. The self-inflicted wounds of the shutdown will pop the housing bubble, which will hollow out school funding and the debt is impossible. They can try to soak the rich but they're already leaving, so expect massive tax hikes on everyone in what is already in the top 5 highest taxed cities. Run if you're in it, stay away if you're not.

Things will pop up just as fast as they died off. I’m optimistic for sure, but it was normal before the pandemic to see small businesses go under in a year or two if they couldn’t pull a crowd.

Have been in North America for a few years, always in the US. Think I'd like to see if I fit into Canada or Mexico.

Portland? I mean...October- April gray skies are tough.

like

Not really actually. We ski and eat bacon. It’s fine. Or, in normal times: jump to Hawaii or Cali easily for sun. Then come back when we’ve had enough of people...Portland is so chill.

When do you think there will be “normalcy” again? Are we going back to the old “normal” are a new one?

I just want to be able to leave my house and not worry that I’ll catch or spread a deadly virus. I’m sick of treating strangers like they might kill me if they get close.

I think at this point, it sounds good enough for me just to live in a world without Covid.

I am so grateful to have a job right now but I am really struggling. I’ve been at D for a little under a year and have been really unhappy with my experience. In particular, my current project and my direct supervisor make me feel unbelievably incompetent and under appreciated. Given COVID, there is little flexibility to roll off. I’ve tried to stick it through but I’m at a breaking point. Any suggestions on how to make the best of it? Or next steps?

Will I need a negative covid test to board a flight back to NY (LGA) ? Has anyone have flew into NYC recently & could tell me their experience? Thank you, for I will be in the MO this upcoming weekend. When I call their state center, it appears most testing sites are closed on Sat/Sun. (Please no snooty/rude comments, I haven’t traveled since March & been been staying at home expect for needed errands. This is not a leisure trip by any means. )

Do people realize that it is risky for an employer to have you on payroll if you aren’t vaccinated? If you get sick, they have to grant you leave and all that. So beyond the other staff, it’s risky to have someone employed and risk they end up with Covid because they will be short on labor. So it’s not unreasonable for an employer to require a vaccine to protect headcount.

Met with my boss today and was told “well you’re way better at your job than we expected...so keep doing that and just that. And it’s tempting to quit, but I make more money than both of my parents combined EVER have, we had zero layoffs during COVID, and I really do love the people.
