Vent: I am tired of reading articles about how to deal with micromanagers and toxic bosses. Why does firm leadership put the onus on underlings to “manage up” instead of leadership actually providing leadership and accountability on problematic personalities? Please don’t offer me constructive feedback here; I’m exhausted and tired of receiving constructive feedback on how to proactively approach this. I promise no managing up is going to really fix how shitty this feels.

Because those problematic personalities are worth more money to the firm than the underlings are. That’s all that matters.

A lot of those partners are rainmakers and at the end of the day it’s all about the bottom line. I wish firms would just own up to it rather than pretend to care about associates’ well being. I have way more respect for people that just admit they are difficult than people who pretend to care but are just as difficult under the facade.

Couldn’t agree more—shouldn’t be your problem to handle alone! That mentality drives good associates to other firms or out of big law entirely. Unfortunately the personality types that would make great supervisors (i.e., the ones that remember their coworkers are human beings too) get too beaten down to stick around because there’s just no accountability from firm leadership.

Because they don’t actually believe in their own “core values.” It’s epidemic.

Hey everyone! I’m new here! I recently accepted a new position (three months ago) and I excitedly accepted the first offer of the salary not knowing allll of the responsibilities that came with this position. I have opened the door about renegotiating my salary for this position and my boss was open to it. What research can I do to see the salary ranges for this position? It’s as a cash application specialist. This positions duties were held by 3 people and is now combined into 1 role.

Trying to do a little market research. I’m a partner at a corporate boutique focused on tech startups, and we’re recruiting BigLaw refugees. Would the following offer be appealing to you?:
-Fixed salary 60% of Cravath scale
-No hours requirement. We expect you to work hard 40-45 hours/week, but we’ll respect your nights and weekends (with rare exceptions), and let you take holidays and planned vacations
-Work from anywhere

Any tips? I have a good diet, exercise regularly, and get 7-9 hours of sleep (sometimes 5-6 during a crazy deal).
