I agree that your manager probably forgot, even if you told her 5 weeks in advance. Her fault, but if you want to be proactive about this in the future you could ensure that your definition of “gave notice” is aligned with hers and potentially that you offer reminders in the weeks leading up to the time off to ensure it stays top of mind for her.

1. Reply back by email: Enjoy your time off! We have a pretty heavy load next week with deliverables, but don’t worry {Jen} and I will work late to make sure we stay on track. And will loop in partner for client meeting coverage as needed! 2. Forward to partner as FYI 3. Get teammate to schedule additional important client calls. Invite partner to all of them.

I never understand when people post stuff like this. Like you just gave more than enough info that if your manager is on this app (which they probably are), they are gonna know it’s you.

You got me really mad now, and not even my manager.

like

You have a bad manager. Try not to work with her in the future or find a way to burn her.

likefunny

Probably don’t need to worry, K2. And in this context, burn would be more like to operate more effectively while she’s away, and make it obvious.

The handful of truly terrible leaders I’ve worked for I just make sure not to work with or assist again.

like

Oh damn son

likefunny

The measured and impactful response would be to say in response to her feedback, “hey! I remember clearing this with you five weeks ago. What does giving you proper notice mean for this project?”

likefunnysmart

She totally forgot and then tried to blame it on you.

likefunnyhelpful

She probably forgot. I do for my team all the time. I ask that they put their OOO on my calendar - then I open it and say, “oh yeah, (team member) is OOO. Oops, need to reassign something.” No problem, no drama.

And I don’t mind if it’s only a 1-2 day notice. Life happens. People need time off.

Sorry OP - she made a bad call.

like

Sounds fishy, cya all coms sounds like he/she failed to report your initial 5 week notification

like

I think it’s not your fault but should have brought it up again as it got closer to your time off. Also put it on their calendar (unsure if you did this)

like

Yea that works too if they can 🤣

5 weeks isn’t enough notice? Da hell

like

Give her the same feedback

like

Leave and give that feedback during your exit interview. There are companies out there where you will be fine taking an impromptu day off so long as you’re a good performer

like

I mean she clearly needed that vacation lol probably just stressed. Just next time maybe bring it up with her closer to the date like a week or so before hand so she can’t be mad. Or if she brings it up again mention “I gave you a 5 weeks notice, how much of a notice do you expect so I know for future reference?”

likehelpful

Not excusable to have one standard for yourself and a different one for your team. If it was a reaction to being stressed, she needs to learn to manage expectations or find a new job she can handle.

Manager sucks, all there is to it

like

Lol. Your manager should be glad they got any notice at all. What if you got hit by a bus or woke up sick and unable to work?
Poor leadership. Seen waaaay too many of these folks in my time in consulting. How leaders like this get promoted is beyond me and speaks to poor company culture overall.

like

If only this were our company. I’d be setting up a 1:1 with this gal first day back.

like

I wouldn’t even need “notice” of taking a single day off, honestly. What if someone is sick? We should know how to cover our bases as a team (as a manger) if someone needs to miss a day on short notice.
