My advice if youre brand new. Observe. Stay quiet. Figure out what you want to do. Then drop the hammer. Lay out the new process, guidelines, rules, etc. Effective immediately. Do it with a smile of course :)

Thank you. This was the plan, but hearing it somebody else confirm it really, really helps.

Need to pull in HR. That is direct insubordination. Set the ground rules that all final decisions are yours. If they publicly challenge that decision again they will be written up and possibly put on a PIP.

This thread has just been a perfect study in unhealthy leadership tactics from toxic men

Invite your ECD or CCO to also attend the meeting about this.

I’m a female and I don’t know if I would call in for back up. There’s already a lack of respect here. I might get their opinion on it via side bar and then just go in strong to establish dominance. It’s a bit harder for female leaders out there. Of course I’m making a massive generalization here a just based on the fact you’re even having this dilemma so if more me if you’re male

I’m a pretty nice guy/CD, but this wouldn’t be a nice conversation.

Yup. I double-checked my email signature afterwards to make sure it was there haha.

The designer works for you. If you want to spell the word with backward letters that's your (potentially awful) decision to make. End of story.

like

Whoa, really? When you are starting you need to look up to your superiors. You were great, you explained. 20 years ago there was no explanation. There is a reason you are the bosa

like

Yeah no. That doesn’t fly. You gave your reasons why it should be that way. Refusing to follow through isn’t appropriate. I think you say YOU will set a meeting to talk about it with them. Not the other way round.

like

Why don't you have design guidelines for this?

I know! There are a few, so people have been disagreeing on which is the correct one for what. Another thing that needs to be nipped in the bud. I’m brand new to the team, so I’m still getting a lay of the land before making big changes. But change is needed.

Maybe it wasn’t worth starting a thing over lower casing a single word? Bringing someone else into the discussion just made the young person dig their heels in. Not a huge surprise! No one likes being ganged up on. What does being in the account for 8 years earn this third party? The right to make someone feel worse about a choice? I’m not super surprised they want to talk. You’re probably coming across as a micromanager

Lol

How'd the meeting go? We want updates.

I am going into my second year practicing law. I am at a small litigation firm (I would prefer not to give my location but will say that I am not in a big market). I am curious as to what the norm is re: billable hours. My firm only gives credit for hours actually billed to the client. This seems wrong? If a partner cuts my time… or the client refuses to may for some of my time (even if I DID THE WORK)… that time doesn’t count towards my total billable hours.

Transitioned into consulting post-MBA (1.5 years ago) and generally enjoyed the experience. Since I joined my comp has gone up ~13% and I’ve liked my project teams but in my most recent review talk my partner told me he thought I was ready to be promoted and had advocated for me but there was an HR rule against it and I was on-track to be promoted in 6 months. Since then I’ve learned that one of my classmates (started 2-3 months before me due to COVID) was promoted last cycle.

2 weeks ago I was asked by a partner if my PTO was flexible as a client sent us an urgent request. I stated no as I requested off 6 months ago. Today I woke up panicking that I jeopardized my career at this firm because I said no to being flexible of my PTO as a new college graduate and working less than a year at my current firm. Should be worrying or brush this off?
