We filled out a survey today, sent by the Director of Student Services. We had to rate a series of questions (maybe 6 total) from ‘very important’ to ‘not important’. I think it was a way for higher ups to get a pulse on what staff feel is needed/how to prioritize the money states were given from the American Rescue Plan.
Anyone know how your district is using these funds?

In February of this year I was approached by a company out of Colorado that’s an AWS reseller (I love working w/ AWS Products). They offered a great 6-figure salary, unlimited PTO, full medical/ dental & Wellness benefits. Things felt too good to be true at first yet I know my worth and thought about time, a company finally saw my worth also, so I resigned from the company I spent over 12+ years with. Things were going great, then June I was placed on a bogus PIP (fully Corrected) then laid off.

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. I don’t want to be miserable again. I know Amazon is poorly reputed for lawyer WLB… what about other places?

Anyone have experience moving from a specialized in-house role to a more general corporate one? And if so, how did you market yourself for the new position? I’m currently in commercial leasing, but I’m eyeing some corporate counsel roles and want to know if it’s a waste of time (for all parties) for me to apply. I have heavy contract drafting experience, so I’m curious whether that can be leveraged for roles where I’ll be drafting totally new types of contracts. I have about 4YOE, FWIW.

Since Covid has made all meetings virtual, it has become completely commonplace at my company for people to be double and triple booked for meetings, with the expectation that they will jump between all of them, chiming in as needed and asking to be caught up on what has been discussed if they have missed something. This seems completely unreasonable/unworkable to me as standard practice but I have never worked in another corporate environment having come from private practice. Is this common?

Post-Friday Fun Thread…tell your funny stories from the prior week here.

This past week, I met with my CFO, HR exec, and an HR manager to review OSHA’s templates for employer vaccination policies. Our HR exec began discussing the part of the policy allowing employees to use “duty time” to get vaccinated. I point out the ripe (but admittedly childish) comedy potential of this section of the policy. Being a predominantly Gen X crowd, Beavis and Butthead impressions and jokes follow.

Thanks OSHA!

Started an in-house attorney job and was told after starting that I need to bill. I came from a company where billing wasn’t required. They said it’s flexible and not real billing but I don’t even know what that means… do you bill in-house ? If so, how much and how do you stay motivated to be efficient and not just do things to meet the billable requirement? I feel like I’m back at a law firm and hate it.

In the last week, I’ve had to reshuffle projects three different times because the startup where I’m GC keeps reprioritizing relationships, moving goalposts on what the MVP is, and rethinking market strategies. And I’m not mad about it - that’s part of the job if you’re working in-house, especially for a startup. I see a lot of complaints in here about how businesses are constantly shifting their priorities or forcing in-house counsel to triage resources, but that’s the gig and part of the fun.

Tips to handle a non-legal boss that cuts you off relevant matters?

Entered to the company as its first in-house counsel

The legal issues were previously handled by the CFO with help of outside counsel. 1st year was hard because he was territorial about legal matters, but I reported directly to the board so it wasn't a true issue

2nd year: The CEO retires, and the new one decides to put me under the CFO in the organigram. Now I'm back to square one bc this guy cuts me off any relevant issue!

My company cut staff to 4 days/wk to save funds. I was getting requests from coworkers for docs needed urgently on our day off (fridays). I would oblige them. But then, I learned that those same coworkers had been put back to 5 days because they were deemed “essential“. I felt foolish and decided to stop working on fridays. One EVP (not the GC) in particular has been aggressively texting/calling me on fridays. How Do I tactfully respond? My out-of-office email is not enough of a hint...

Being the only expert around?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to head in-house in the next 12 months, but I work in a specialized area with v few openings.

I just noticed a job posting for a senior counsel role at a startup. This would be my first in-house role so I was wondering if anyone could speak to their experience as the only expert/specialist in their area at a company? Recognize it’s a massive growth opportunity but also scared of the big jump in responsibility/no safety net.

Feeling pretty frustrated. I got a new job a year ago. I have an amazing boss and love the work. I was supposed to move to one city but never did because of the pandemic. Now my boss has a new boss who wants me to move to a different city where most of our team is. HR is refusing any moving assistance because I “should have already moved.” I repeatedly asked about moving and was told to stay put. My boss is advocating for me but it’s a F10 so little movement. Why are HR departments like this 😒
