You do you. My husband and I bought a house in the suburbs near DC right before we got married. Given the high rent we were paying, it made sense.
During the pandemic, there's nothing that the city life offers you that you would pay the extra $700 for - no pools, gyms or other amenities are going to be open. And if anything, you want to have more space and be away from other people.
Financially, buying is a better option for most people as long as you have 20% to put down for the house and then can factor in maintaining the house.
If you are happy and want to live in the city, try to negotiate. With so many people leaving the city and apartment life, you're likely to get a nicer apartment for the same price

Who cares what others are doing? Do what feels right to you and your family.
Are you looking to have kids? That will decide where you’ll move. Are you ready to buy? Do you have visa issues?

I think what is holding me back is the following:
1) I am concerned about the job security in current market
2) I have down payment saved but think it might be too early for us to move to suburbs, certainly makes sense to move there with kids
3) renting gives me the opportunity to stay in JC luxury building (a similar unit would cost 1M to buy)
4) I see high taxes and HOA as not worth it as they increase the cost of ownership exponentially in long run
5) rent is cheaper option in JC while buying is absolutely better for Suburbs
6) part of me wants to buy but then part of me wants to live the city life while we can
7) I also have FOMO of missing out on all time low rates, good time to lock in low monthly payments while enjoying bigger space since we are WFH till June next year at least
Checkout Soceity Hill - Droyers Point Jersey City good option till you have school going kid and still in Jersey City without paying to park your car.
Good investment property once you move to suburbs as I see rentals being snatched up fast.Light rail next to property in 2 years now a mile walk

I also feel suburb prices have sky rocketed now, I kind of missed the boat on that one
