Very curious: white/male/straight when you see disclaimers like this, do you even bother applying or just skip to the next? (Note: not stating a position here of what is right or not.)

It doesn't dissuade me from reaching out. Although one thing I have noticed, the salary budgeted for roles with this note attached always seems to be on the low side. I have a relatively small sample size of 4, but 100% of all 4 were looking to hire someone and grossly underpay them. I would hope that's just coincidence and not exactly what it seems like.

like

I’m grossly underpaid and it’s the same as my female colleagues. I wanted to double check we all got paid equally.

Had yet another recruiter at a "name" agency just yesterday talk to me for more than an hour—amazing, casual, easy, productive conversation...they were legit super nice & human, also telling me my work is stellar and I'd be a great fit etc...and then, at the end, "You should know that client is looking for diversity on this one, so..." They gave me the "but we always look to hire the best person for the job" caveat too, but writing was on the wall. DO I need to try for Gut or the Community or Burrell where being a dorky straight older white dude is "diversity"? :)

I work at a woman owned agency with a diverse crowd of employees. I’m a straight, white man. I feel like a welcome part of the diverse fabric that makes us up, and it’s really nice to work with people with different perspectives who don’t all look like me.

Go ahead and apply. Inclusion doesn’t mean you’re excluded.

I do a lot of hiring and there def is a desire to bring in diverse candidates. We’d like to encourage more points of view. But that doesn’t mean we won’t hire someone who’s great who doesn’t necessarily help us on that front. It just means we’re making an effort to add to what we have.

Thank you for this.

I’m Hispanic and they still ignore me (shrugs)

Damn former droga 5 and no luck? Figured that was an easy in to pretty much anywhere that sees the name (seriously.)

I've had recruiters outright tell me that their clients (agencies) list all the boxes to check off and then, like it's an afterthought, say, "Oh yeah, and don't send me any older straight white guys."

likehelpful

On my team I am the only white male, everyone else is a woman, hispanic, asian or other and it’s pretty nice.

Reverse discrimination. And I’m not male before the comments come.

like

“No such thing” Males? 😂😅

Wouldn’t bother

likefunny

I was kidding

I see this as typically they get lots of one type of candidates so they would like to make sure at least in the consideration phase, there is a mix of diverse candidates on that short list.

likesmart

Cynically, someone brought up that the freelancers are usually the white males so the agency doesn't need to credit them.

likehelpful

I’ve almost always been credited as a freelancer, all but one exception, that landed a HUGE awards haul.

If this is the recruiter I'm thinking of, he def isn't putting many white guys forward if any. I've seen job posts of his reposted over the span of a month plus trying to tick the diversity check box. In those cases, can't hurt to apply, but your chances are incredibly slim.

If it’s who I think he is a snake

It shouldn’t discourage you from applying.

I wouldn’t bother. It’s like saying they’d really prefer someone who speaks Japanese, but others will be considered. That means you will be considered last, and even if you get the job, know they really don’t want you there.

I should apply 100%

i just select ‘prefer not to say’ under those options. But most of the time i don’t bother.

Since when are LGBTQIA candidates either underrepresented or sought out on an application? I understand not discriminating against someone based on sexual orientation or gender identity, but that’s not the same thing as making those criteria a basis for hiring someone. How would a recruiter even know such a thing if it were not asked/answered?

Hand up. What’s the “IA” stand for at the end?

Legit question, not trolling: how should inclusive hiring actually look like?

I can only think of reviewing job ad language for bias and thinking hard about where you source candidates from / post the ads. Recruiting is not my field and I’m old/male/white/straight, but genuinely curious.

This above feels super lazy tho.

I've seen blinding the hiring manager from seeing the names on the applications as a tactic. I also think having short q's that every candidate has to fill out instead of cover letters also helps remove some bias.

likesmarthelpful

This is often standard boilerplate language added to all of the job listings at a company to indicate they welcome all candidates. Don’t let it discourage you from applying.
