Very senior associate joined Am Law 50 firm about 6 months ago. First 4 months were busy (about 175 hours/month). Last 2 months have been super slow (only 70 hours/month). All substantive feedback has been great (and I know my work quality is good). How aggressive do I need to be asking for work? Should I try to relax and wait for the work to come? Why am I always stressed the minute my work is slow? Will firms push a senior out for low hours within 2-3 years of hire? Appreciate any thoughts.

I’ve been getting a lot of anxiety recently related to work (60+ hour weeks, tight deadlines, harsh account/PMs in the past are triggering it now) and I feel like I start to feel resentment and end I up leaving to work at another agency where the same thing happens down the road. Anyone ever been disciplined for being too busy? I’m 4th year lit who committed to too many cases without appreciating the time commitment required. My firm has no formal mentorship/structure, so no one’s regulating associate workloads. No juniors to pass work to as they are also slammed. I’m missing internal deadlines, but my work is always good and I’ve never prejudiced a client, etc. I’m worried about getting cut off by my favorite shareholder, but will he understand if I just explain?

England & Wales: How bad does it look to leave your firm on qualification? It seems to be more common nowadays, but feels like there’s still a stigma. (I’m a trainee solicitor qualifying in Sept. Work at a London city firm).

If you don’t have 8 hours of billable time a day, do you leave as is or do you fill in the gap with non-billable work? While I am in the office, I don’t always get the billable amount since I don’t have enough work. Seems like a waste of time to enter non-billable time just to fill in the gap but I also don’t want them to think I am not there and slacking off.

Had a (Zoom) training today with some fellow junior associates where talked primarily about diversity in our firm. 1 associate (a man) characterized women leaving the firm after starting families as their "independent choices", which I understood to imply that there is nothing wrong with the profession and women leave because they want to focus on families. The group spoke up and rebutted this but it got me thinking -

Question for all my litigation senior associates/special counsel: are you getting the full court press on business development? Have you developed any new business and how did you go about getting that opportunity? I just feel like I am repeatedly running into a brick wall even though I am publishing articles, networking, and meeting with potential clients. I have had a lot of success in my position at my firm. Clients have been extremely open with their appreciation and desire to work with me. I have far exceeded my billing requirements by over 75-100 hours each month. What is the best way to seek a midstream raise? Also, what is a reasonable raise. Is asking for 15-20k ridiculous when I think I have earned it?
