Index-Match
Is that even a question?!
Neither. I avoid excel.
I haven't used index match but it seems more complicated than I want to learn about until I need to use it. Seems like more keystrokes for the same output (in the case of a flat file)
Nerdiest posts ever all of you go watch some sports or something please
Index match is way more powerful, but people get intimidated when trying to figure out how it works. Well worth the time investment.
This logic of "index match ALWAYS -- oh so powerful" is ridiculous. Use whatever tool that is best suited to the job. VLookup for very simple/quick lookups, index-match for more complicated ones, VBscript or other coding for super complex ones.
Index-match-match, as an array function, of course

Ey1-- hopefully you don't ever have to hand these off to clients because that is a recipe for disaster.. duplicate data, working tabs, etc. Better if it's all integrated into one place from one source of data so that updates can be dynamic. And for the record, if you are already copying and pasting into other tabs and re-arranging, that is significantly more effort than using index match
This is one of those things that if I was managing you, I would look at your excel and make you re-do it, even if the "answer" is correct. Good to learn it the right way to save yourself time in the future, then to reinforce at bad habit that introduces a lot of risk into your excel model..
VLookUp
Index match for sure. Far more dynamic.
Posed question after seeing people still talking about VLookUp. I've had a PL who used it too... so frustrating
Index match - more powerful
Ey1 surprised you've never needed index match unless you actually go and move your columns around and transpose tables to make it work.. vlookup is only usable with very simple data..
@M1 if I have to I'll copy the table to a working tab and move the columns around. Haven't yet transposed a table to get vlookup to work, i would probably just use index march in that scenario
After learning index match, I never touched vlookup again
Do you even array
