Either is fine. They are the same thing. They just trade differently. VTI is very slightly cheaper but not enough to make any difference.
I used to buy etf but then it’s a hassle to manually buy it when you got monkey. I moved to vtsax and auto invest every paycheck

I used the vanguard mutual funds for a long time over ETFs because you could set up a monthly purchase. Mutual funds are easier for long term investing.

If they have a capital gain distribution, yes. I don’t think VTSAX has has a capital gain distribution in 10-15 years. Even if you get a distribution, it is a temporary issue since your basis would increase and have a smaller gain or a loss later. If it is big enough it can obviously cause tax issues in the current year though
