Plus a tax on hours is highly regressive if constructed this way.

You elect democrats and eventually they run out of other peoples money and need more somewhere.
You're right no income tax in Washington. But gotta love liberal Seattle. Tax away!
You are right DD1. I guess I learned something new today. Washington is still in the top half of state for overall taxation, but no income tax.
Still an actual tax on employment/working just seems incredibly anti-business
How is that ridiculous A3? This tax makes labor more expensive which leads to less overall labor being demanded, particularly low wage employees most affected by this tax who can be replaced with automation. Have you ever taken an Econ class?
They need it so they can turn more lanes into toll lanes it’s expensive guys.
^No they are not raising a tax. They are creating an entirely new tax that disincentives hiring employees which, you know, jobs help people avoid homelessness.
Also they spent 50% more on homelessness last year and saw rate increase. The city had record revenues. More tax money does not suggest better outcomes
I thought Washington state has no income tax
If the government wants more money they need to earn it. We citizens already pay more than enough in taxes to have the essentials. Representatives need to be held accountable for wasteful spending
Could always move away
^I don’t live in Seattle, quite the opposite. Just saw this in the news
“ Anti business” they’re raising the tax so that they can build low cost housing. Yeah, sorry that doesn’t generate money.
I’ve not taken an Econ class but I’m also not spewing something that came out of some magazine. What job exactly do you think in Seattle, will be replaced by automation?
Just about any low wage manual job that can be replaced withe a kiosk or robot.
Or you chase companies like Amazon who has paused construction planning of a new 7000 employee building explicitly citing this law as the reason.
Both business groups and unions have come out against this tax
FYI - Washington doesn’t have *personal* income taxes, but the taxes on businesses are very high, and the structure for filing them is pretty complex too. That cost is obviously then passed on to customers.
I’m all for higher taxes if that’s what the citizens want, but at least make it reasonable to file and pay them. The number of times in filling out a tax return trying to do it right, and I shout, “why do you make it so hard for me to give you your money?!”
F*ing Mckinsey
Was more reacting more to PwC1
I’m not sure how to address your response. Yes, my bad it’s a new a tax not raising taxes. Still to say that this tax disincentives employers from hiring new employees is ridiculous. Such a trite argument. “Trickle down economics?” Is that your argument?
A3 - low income jobs like retail clerks and food service
Jobs that have been automated should be taxed as well (the companies)
