~$400 a day for someone with 10 years of experience is robbery. They definitely know this, so it’s time for you to address it.
if they say no, well, you’re working in one of the most hirable roles at the moment..
If you have 10 years of web and visual design experience, you technically already have 10 years of UX/UI tech experience. I feel like you could get a job anywhere as a very senior designer, a design lead, or even a principal designer with that background! Don't sell yourself short!
Appreciate that! I’ve been kinda a loner career wise, not much mentorship, but owning lots of things and wearing lots of design adjacent hats in smaller orgs so it’s hard for me to see it in that light! This is first time at large tech company.
DM me, I might have an opportunity for you!
Definitely getting underpaid. I don’t have close to 10 years of exp in web/ux/ui design as a career, (more so in a roundabout way), I’m on my first job after transitioning from another industry and making $5 more. Just for perspective.
If you like the team and work, definitely ask for a raise to continue but mention the value you bring to the project itself and your past experience. Inflation maybe. Personal reasons, nope - although those are more valid over your time on the project.
On the flip side, definitely look for other jobs and position yourself as a senior designer. If you’re at a big tech company, it will be even more valid that you’re senior. If they ask why you’re leaving X company you can mention the contract ending and what your experience there will bring to that company.
Thank you!
You should be looking for at least $65+. Don't be afraid of looking for new opportunities.
To help you compare current market rates, I have 7 YOE (web, UX/UI, Product), I'm currently a Senior Product Designer 2 at a mature SAAS startup, and I make a base salary of ~$75/hour.
With 10 years of experience, you can definitely make more than me!!
Yep, I know I'm underpaid, and that's even after I got a 10% raise a couple months ago for my anniversary 😭 The perks are okay though, we have unlimited PTO and I've been taking about 6-8 weeks off per year for the last 3 years, and the work-life balance is stellar (I only work about 36-42 hours a week), which has been a large part of why I've stayed on. My manager is also amazing, and I've had really bad managers before, so it's hard to leave a great one.
I'm planning on looking for a new job soon though, since I know I can potentially make a lot more, and there's no real room for upward mobility or top-of-market pay at my current job, since it's just too small of a company. No IPO on the near-term horizon either, so my stocks are worthless 😓
You need to ask for at the very least $60
You could definitely be making more! I’d start looking for something else if you can while staying at this job.
I just got a contract offer for 70/hr and I have 5 years experience. Also large tech company. definitely ask for more.
IMO this is a great time to renegotiate terms and probably good to start looking elsewhere while you do so
Appreciate the feedback! Thank you.
I live in SF/Bay area, tech Capitol of the USA if you live here. Going rates for freelance interaction design is minimum $120/hr. With remote work a thing, it’s even easier to work across the US. Ask for more.
What city you in? And it’s large tech company! You could be getting 120+ per hour. If you love the project just get a second job
Seattle area, just out of commuting range reasonably so sticking to remote. Don’t love the project THAT much! Lol. Appreciate the perspective. Thanks!
you’re getting paid nothing. sorry
Google was paying 45/hr?
