Wanna join MBB due to the caliber of colleagues. But don’t want the crazy hours. What are my alternatives in terms of consulting firms?

In any consulting firm you can get by with 45-50 hours. However that will come at the cost of performance, career growth and job security, potentially. Firms don't literally ask you to work 70 hours, but if you want to be a top performer and do things needed to be regarded that way, in addition to your full time client project you're proba5 going to spend an extra 2-3 hours everyday or over the weekend to hit that 45+ 15/20. Everyone around you will do it whether or not you want to and you'll get graded based on comparitive performance with peers. I have 2 kids, other folks at my level in my larger team are either single or just married. My preferences are different about how I spend my 9pm or weekends. It comes down to that. If you're looking for a long term career consider that. If you're looking for a short term benefit and vertical uplift for exit, go for it!

Agreed - partners salivate at the follow on potential, can't stay away

You’re really asking a model question: The most interesting problems are usually the hardest problems which usually require the most work and which are the most likely to draw-in bright people who enjoy solving problems and hence those people are likely to work harder solving them. And the brightest people are usually attracted to solving the hardest problems, and want to do so surrounded by other bright people. And those people usually also want to be good if not very good if not the best at what they do, so they work harder and smarter and have high productivity, which solves harder problems better and faster (than others) and hence attracts more and harder problems to solve. So don’t ask “which firm” rather ask “what sort of work” and “what sort of people” and follow the threads from there.

I mostly work on cases that last between 3-6 months. Many projects at my current firm lasts 1+ years. I work on anything from process improvement to M&A business due diligence, to restructuring and carve outs. The longer projects allow us to solve broader problems and tackle them from the root cause.

Don’t do consulting if you want WLB. If you really want MBB, suck it up for two years then bounce to industry in a better position

To be honest, most top tier consulting firms will have bad hours, that is the nature of professional services. If you want top caliber of colleagues, look at business strategy / Corp strategy / biz ops, etc. teams in industry or startups that are built by top ex-consultants

Hence I’m not applying due to the long hours. Question was about alternatives

Even at pee dubs hours can be bad - depends on what project you’re on and what type of consulting. Deals tend to be real bad - I’ve done easily many 70-80 hour deals. The non deal work is a lot better at about 50-60.

Principal, client facing

I agree with the posts here - it depends on your project but a majority of projects you'll be on at top firms, you'll be working long hours.

Are you able to adjust your preferences e.g. being okay with crazy hours for say 2 years?

Thanks @PwC 2. It’s a hard no lol

Also depends on industry. Earlier in my career had a phase where I was doing a ton of media & entertainment cases. Even on the most demanding projects I found the WLB to be amazing. Even these days with m&e companies all on fire, my colleagues who are serving those clients all seem to have the best WLB (with a few exceptions).

Which firm is this? And are you talking about media networks, ad agencies or like Universal/ Disney ?

From talking to students at multiple M7 schools, it seems like all of the BB/MBB/FAANG companies recruit at most if not all of the schools . So if you're planning on recruiting for one of these, is there really a major difference in career opportunities between each school? Asking because it seems like some schools are specifically known for finance vs consulting vs tech, but if the companies are all recruiting at all these schools, the differences don't seem as pronounced to me.

I'm an account manager, but want to get better at helping and managing my team. So, I've started doing some of the copywriting myself so I can get a better feel for what's involved, what's needed, and how I can help others improve. I recently attended an SEO conference and then spent a weekend reading everything I can get my hands on. I've also got a reading list I'm building out. How does everyone bill for travel? Example - flying out Monday for a depo on Tues Wed, flying back Thursday. My gut has always been to bill for working hours time on the flying days and hearing days, but is that what everyone does? Can I bill 8 hours (or more) for a full travel day even if I’m not working every minute (but I’m also not not-working)? Nobody at my firm talks about this and at this point I’m too embarrassed to ask.

My manager is a woman, and she is always commenting on how I look in front of everyone - and it just gets so weird. Ex: on Zoom calls with everyone, she’ll call attention to my outfit, or to my extensions, or to my make up when it REALLY ISNT THAT BAD! Plus we Zoom with all other guys so it’s like UGH stop making it weird. And it’s never a straight forward compliment - it’ll be like “Hey arent you cold in that shirt?” *attention is automatically on my shirt”.CONT.
