FSO Assurance Staff NYC starting salary?
If I got paid overtime I’d be rich
If a woman parter said that to me, I'd want her hung. Your personal life and the decision to start a family is your own business.
Just noticed a senior took maternity leave came back for like 1.5 months and got promoted to manager... if I recall correctly 2 years with the firm as a part time staff and 1 year with the firm as a part time senior... it is very political...I see lot of staff working crazy hours not having marriage or children and after 3 years of full time working and having passed CPA still not promoted to senior, I thought that was messed up...
If a male partner said that, he would be hung. #doublestandard
*hanged
A woman partner at my office specifically told the new women associates to wait to be "experienced managers." #womenlib? Seriously, I feel the need to sell some of my eggs to finance freezing a few.
I had my first at the beginning of S2 year at a new job. Was on maternity leave most of S2 year, so spent a 3rd year as senior before promotion to manager (about 1/4 in my group promoted to manager after S2, so I wasn't technically behind but not at the very top). It was definitely challenging, especially since I had to build rapport with my clients and teams, and we also had no family in the area to help. I'm on track to make senior manager with my class, and now have 2 kids. I would say have kids whenever you want. If a career in public accounting is important you will make it work; if not, you'll find another job and be happy anyway.
I am a senior and on maternity leave now. I plan on coming back and staying... I think I will have to be on a flexible work arrangement though. The firm seems really willing to make it work - I think it's about building a support group around you and making sure they know what you want and making sure you stick with it.... All that being said we will see how it goes once I'm actually back. On another note, having a family is a decision that shouldn't be based on revolving it around career choices - if you really want a family and really want to stay, you will find a way.
I had a kid as a 2nd year staff and my wife os a SAHM. Things are definitely tight but I wouldn't change it. It is easier on her to have children young and it is well worth the financial struggle right. It's not like we make that much money now anyway, my kids are going to be driving and out of my house at the time when i start making tons of money while all these people who wait will be dealing with toddlers and then who will be laughing
I started out as a new staff with two young kids. It is doable with the right firm and the right support at home (my husband and mother-in-law help with kids during busy times). It has been very challenging, definitely not for the weak.
Exactly moss Adams. People just think the work magically gets done when people get months out on paternity.
@moss Adams, that's horrible. I would quit.
You have to do what's right for you and your spouse. Raising kids is never easy.
@EY2 - I too thought I'd have to be on flexible work arrangement. I went back full time and said to myself that I'd go on a flexible work arrangement when it got to be unmanageable. My oldest is 4 and I am still on a full time schedule. You just have to figure out how to utilize flexibility in an informal way to make it work for you, as sometimes a reduced schedule isn't financially worth it if you end up working a lot of overtime.
@OP I used to feel like it was necessary to wait until manager. Then I realized that was unnecessary. I'm working on getting knocked up ASAP. Praying you get to a place where you can do what you want and what works for your family.
Had my first as an A3, now an S2 with a second on the way. Working spouse. It can be done if you work together. Honestly I wish we'd waited just a few more years because of the financial aspect. Daycare is a killer, and won't get easier until they get to kindergarten. A few more years and it'd be easy financially, which imho has been the hardest thing.
so yeah, to answer your question, you can do it too, even if you only work 15 hour weeks, if you carry yourself well
@MA1 I have found that people that are married and/ or have kids seem to get promoted much faster than those that don't in my office, since there's that bias of trying to show we're a well rounded firm that has work-life balance, and yes!, you can have a family and work here. It's all about the image that the firm projects.
Thx everyone. I just fear feeling overwhelmed and therefore not being able to be a good parent, employee, or spouse.
Apparently you aren't in SoCal cuz we just had our Forum W event today that addressed all this. Have your kid whenever you want. If you are a good employee, you and the firm will make it work
As long as you make sure you have your priorities set you're fine. If your firm is good and willing to work with you, you can do it. But if they make it difficult on you and make you feel like you're both half ass employee and parent, be ready to walk away from the job and out your children and family first.
