Want to have a child and get an MBA in the next five years. Any ideas on which I should do first? I hear it can be handy to be pregnant during school to minimize time out of the workforce. I'm 30 :)

It should not deter them from giving you an offer because that should not come up in the recruiting process unless you are already pregnant and showing. Get mad at you maybe but it would be illegal for them to retaliate against you since pregnancy is a protected class

I did b school with two kids and it was really hard. I highly recommend waiting to have kids if at all possible. First year is especially hard with kids, with recruiting and networking and socializing. My school had a lot of women who had kids in their second year, and they were able to front load classes and take a solid amount of time off.

Alternatively if you get pregnant after getting the job you’d get maternity leave

I don’t think it would piss anyone off. If you are going to have children while in the workforce it matters very little whether that is 6months or 3 years into the job. Might even be better to lose you for a period of time while you are new!

Be mindful of benefits companies add onto FLMA. I believe Deloitte expects you to be employed with them a full year before they give you the additional paid leave beyond FMLA. If you are a few months in while interviewing, that could be an added challenge. Not directly related to MBA, but may help with the decision.

op, listen to your heart. everyone’s dreams, experiences, life circumstances, and journey are different. yes, ask around, learn from other’s experiences but don’t attach yourself from any of the answers you get, nor be afraid of trying (although i know a child is a lifetime commitment)... but my point is, ask yourself what’s best for you, and listen to your heart. if a thought of an mba or a kid crossed your mind, you bet you already know the answer. open your eyes and be aware of big signs life puts your way. best of luck! ❤️

I went to grad school while working FT and then had my first baby. We tried to get pregnant before that, but it didn’t happen right away. Don’t wait too long to get started! Took us 4 years.

I did the kid thing first (2 lovely daughters) and now am really wanting an MBA. I’m a director at PwC so not sure if it’s worth it. Sometimes it’s tough being a woman - I somehow doubt our male counterparts have this struggle to the extent we do

@EY good point. Was thinking it would piss of employer if I got back from MBA and then needed to take mat leave immediately. Or worse, deter them from giving offer.

The MBA is an amazing experience. You learn a lot, you learn, you travel. So if possible, to maximize it I would suggest MBA first, and getting pregnant in last semester if you can time it. I don’t think the employer will get pissed off for reasons above. It may be useful to check on your specific hormone levels with a specialized doctor, you could see how your ‘reserve’ is looking and in how much of a rush you should be - at least statistically speaking.

Agree with B1 and D2. MBA first. Don't have your kids in first year. We did have classmates who delivered a baby in first year, but I don't know how they did that... Others took one-year leave from school... To maximize the experience, I think it's better to fully participate in recruiting and everything else in first year and enjoy your time traveling/ exchange in second year. I've seen classmates getting pregnant in second year and took maternity leave several months into the job (corporate). Plus, the paid leave. Plus, getting MBA pay earlier is always good. I graduated from MBA at 25 and I'm glad I didn't wait. And, I think you still have time, if you're ok with having the first kid at 33-35.

MBA first

I don’t think there is any rule and you’re actually the only one who knows the answer to your question. There is never a good time for maternity and hundreds of good reasons to continuously postpone. Decision to give birth and raise kids can’t fit in any rational model... humanity would have collapsed long ago ... Wherever you are in your life, parenting will always be the storm that reshuffles all your priorities and beliefs (but don’t mis-read me, I like to think this is for the better ...). MBA with kids is hard, consulting job with kids is hard, actually any kind of working mum is hard and even stay at home mum is hard, just because you are suddenly becoming responsible for another human being, you are losing control of your time and priorities are continuously conflicting. And guess what, despite all these horrible things, best moments in life are when you spend time with your kids (... and when you get promoted ...) If you feel something is missing in your life now (whether this is a baby or an MBA) then make it a priority and you will make the rest fit around.

2nd year of MBA to have kids IF you have a job offer already

P3, if your director want do you think you will get out of it? Is it more for the degree versus the experience? I’m a consultant and can’t seem to justify to stop working when I keep getting promoted.
