Want to join PE from a non-MBB firm. From an advanced degree (PhD) background and hence mostly exposed to the LS industry. Want to know if anyone did this transition: PhD > Consulting > PE. Is there any way to go for LS specific teams in PE ?

Will a cover letter significantly help my application while applying to MBB? Or significantly hurt if I don’t attach one? There’s nothing unusual about my resume to explain (i.e. employment gaps, reapplication, etc) so my CL would primarily be explaining why I want to work for the firm.

Pre-partner level (AP / Principal) at MBB — have failed the partner promotion and being asked to stick around for at least another 6-12 months as the firm believes in my potential (but of course no guarantee to make it). Gutted for not having been promoted despite the strong traction built.
Have an offer from tier-2 (S&, EYP) to join as a partner with significant pay bump.

I am an MBB partner and have been approached by a recruiter with a Senior Partner opportunity in the strategy unit if one of the big 4, in a different country. Advancement in my current Firm is unlikely in my current context So this would imply a more senior role, the opportunity to rebuild a practice, and likely doubling comp. However, I see it as a downgrade in prestige and the talent pool, and above all find it strange they look for someone outside the Firm. Any thoughts or advise?

Tips on budgeting/spending carefully during MBA?

Am I the only one who has barely any work to do? I finish my work in a matter of a few hours, and spend my days bored out of my mind. Worst part is that I have to stay at the office until 8PM min, because otherwise it looks unprofessional. I fear that they want to fire me or that they’re unhappy with my work, but at every quarterly review, I have nothing but praise with minor comments. I realise I’m lucky, but can’t help but feel guilty, like a fraud and bored.

Would you leave your current PE firm for a more prestigious that pays $100k-150k more but you are working 20-30 hours more? Currently at a firm where I see a long term path and I work 40-50 hours. Struggling if I should go for prestige and work and larger deals at bigger firms or stay where I am now. If I don’t lateral now I won’t have a chance in the future/ much harder.

From those already at buyside firms, what buyside role would you find helpful to have a teammate with deep financial diligence experience in a certain industry? Deal team or operations? Why?

I have 2 offers and I was wondering which will have better exit opps into PE front office down the road. Keep in mind I went to a non-target school. Either front office at a not well known boutique IB or middle office (fund analysis) at a prestigious PE firm. As people who might potentially review these resumes down the road, any insight from you all is helpful.

A large part of my job involves building models or making reports that involve copying numbers from one document to another. Sometimes, if I get interrupted, I lose my train of thought and make mistakes in getting the right number.
