Want to move client side with the long-term goal to lead marketing and innovation for a large organization.

Just got accepted to my top choice MBA program. Think this is a good investment?

Congrats! Read stuff from Scott Galloway or listen to his podcast. Many people say an MBA is only worth it if from a top institution - ie Harvard, Kellogg, Stern, etc. Now may be a good time to go if jobs aren’t coming back. Guess it also depends on whether you’ll be taking out loans or can pay for some of it but it does seem like clients still love those MBAs.

It feels like this is the right time to hopefully make a lateral transition at some point. Agree that many places view it as a pre-req. Whether that’s warranted or not, I think at a certain level it becomes a a box people look to see if you check.

Aside from that, I’m genuinely excited when I look at the curriculum, and all that there is to learn... plus the network building which is arguably just as valuable.

like

Sounds like you’re making a good choice, then!

Hope it’s all you want it to be, OP.

You’ll never regret investing in yourself.

It’s worth it. There are places that view that as a pre-req to certain roles.

And, even if not, it gives you a shared language with executives and a better understanding of how they’re likely to think about things.

Plus, now’s the perfect time to tap out of the job hunt for two years.

like

Agree, clients are requiring an MBA more and more often, which is frustrating. A friend of mine is at Kellogg and says it’s just a networking ploy. Feels expensive for a title and a network....

like

100%. I am struggling to make the move without one but I’m at a point in my career where it feels late. The other option is moving over sooner for a lower role at an org that will pay for it.

like

Worth it from a top 10 program.

smart

Only worth it if you know the job you want hires from the school directly or if you will be going to a top school or one with a great network. Also depends on your age - younger than 30 for sure. Ideally 25-27.

smart

Disagree slightly on this one. If you figure it out around 30 to you can and still should go. You will be miles ahead of your classmates in work experience and have a strong recruiting profile.

Went to a top-3 MBA school, and have wrestled with this question myself. My two cents: at the end of the day, you alone determine whether or not it was “worth it”...not your peers, not the companies you apply to, and not the industry we’re in. Everybody’s situation is unique (career trajectory, family background, social networks, etc.), and everyone’s opinion is going to be relative. Sure, certain doors will be easier to get in with one, i.e. if you’re going the traditional brand management route...but your stated goal is achievable at plenty of top-tier organizations without an advanced degree.

All that is to say, it’s what you make of it. I know folks that have gone to Ivy schools and thought it a complete waste of time, and I know people that have gone to non top-25 schools that thought it was totally worth the investment. Whichever route you choose, go full bore and don’t look back.

Congratulations. It's an investment in time and money but from my experience has paid off. Size of alum network is probably the biggest return, so make that consideration

Question on R2 strategy. I had not done any MBA app prep until after Halloween when I got a 760. I work in IB and my schedule makes it hard to put in quality time on the apps during the week. I planned to apply to Wharton/Booth/Kellogg/Ross but so far have only competed Kellogg essay 1. I don’t have a resume up to date. I don’t want to talk myself out of applying to Wharton but given the current lack of progress and slim odds at W, should I focus on a quality 3 apps at B/K/R?

Incoming MBA, I have my tuition paid for and rent covered (I will be an RA). So the only thing I need to pay for is food and entertainment. Do you think 20k is enough to last me through the 2 years? I will make a little money interning in the summer, so that would be a safety valve if I blow through the 20k.

Or… should I take a small loan?

How do you keep up with your non-billable tasks, while still hitting your hours? I delegate as much of these tasks as I can, but they still take up a good portion of my day. For reference, I spent about five hours today preparing a customized report for a client (although these reports are time-consuming, we never bill for them). I also had a 30 minute call with a partner related to business development. How am I supposed to get any actual work done? Any tips or tricks that work for you?

Not comparing but I have seen people earning 10-15 easily with this YOE. So just wanted to know.
