First 10k should go in an S&P index fund. Max out a Roth IRA if you're under 40

I really do suggest you not max your 401k and contribute up to the matching amount. A lot of 401k plans eat up your returns with fees you cant see

Depending on the fees you pay, you may be better off opening an ira or roth. Your 401k plan may be expensive. I suggest as a rookie subscribe to a few investment news letters.. Start with ETFs like ishares and spdr etfs. You can look up all their etfs on their websites and purchase the ones in sectors that interest you.

Maybe some blue chip stocks, reits, or a cheap condo/townhouse to rent out
