Your current employer can certainly ask, but you’re in no way obligated to show them or tell them about it. That said, if they do ask and you don’t show them, or you try to use the offer as leverage and your current employer doesn’t offer to match — that’s going to cause an awkward situation. You’ll most likely have to be prepared to walk.
You absolutely can! But that still won’t guarantee they’ll do a retention offer or that the offer will match what you have in hand. It’s a difficult situation… that’s why you’ll either have to be prepared to walk or possibly stay in your current role and have the scenario of your manager/employer knowing you’re looking elsewhere.
