Apply if you’ve been invited.

Seems to me that those in charge in your lit group have decided that you are not going to advance there. Unless the leadership of that group changes, you might be stuck at your current level for the foreseeable future. Are you ok with that? If you are not ok with that, it may be worth changing groups. It depends on what your new boss would be like. It would be a resume builder.

like

That sounds quite positive, I’d apply. At least it shows that you are interested in growth and potentially advancement.

Apply and move on if you are accepted. Also, give your career beyond your current situation some thought. Do you want to go in-house at some point? Transactional experience is pretty much necessary, lit a plus cuz it informs your transactional analysis.

like

Thanks! I’ve been in house for about five years already, but I can absolutely see how transactional experience is helpful.

Broaden your experience, it will be helpful at your current company or if you leave at some point.

unless you actually love lit and have disdain for transactional work, get the added experience in a new (internal) surrounding. but if you love lit, then why not go leverage that experience to become a trial attorney at a reputable firm?

My manager and the person above her agree I should be promoted and actually asked they reconsider the last review period. The only thing she could come up with is that I’m not “social” enough (I am a bit reserved and don’t spend my work hours talking about all the work I’m doing with people because i am, you know, actually doing work). It’s incredibly frustrating.

We’re you invited at the request of your current group? It may be more of a suggestion than an invitation. I would take the opportunity unless litigation is the only thing you wish to do.

I suppose it MAY be worth asking if they’ve discussed it with your VP to see what is said. But, regardless, broadening your experience can be helpful later on and it sounds like you aren’t getting what you need where you are. So this could be a good opportunity to stretch and make yourself even more marketable.

Q for my friend.. she’s newish to flipping her own houses and is a contractor. She bought an investment property and is going to do the work on the house.
