Was let go from a position this week and have been gearing up the search. I was there for just under 90 days. Plan is to discuss that there was very little (read: absolutely zero) training, a bad culture fit (toxic culture), and hidden managerial issues (micromanager). Aside from such a short tenure just smelling funny, any red flags I might be missing? I can elaborate a bit more, but I feel a bit relieved to be moving on - DMs and recruiters welcome lol.

I don’t think I would go into that much detail. I would just generically state that before the 90 days you realized it was just not the right for you. You amicably parted ways.

J1, I don’t think so. People in this profession need to let that antiquated thinking go. To me, it would make OP look like OP has standards, knows their worth and values healthy work environments.

Something about blaming it on a lack of training wouldn’t sit well with me. I think OK to stick with “it turned out to be a bad fit,” and there might be a way to work in the management aspect but was this person not involved in your hiring process?

I’m wondering if the same applies to law firm.. could I blame my firm for lack of training and micromanage etc and being let go during probation?

Hey this happened to me recently as well and I also only had a tenure of 90 days the good news is this is the best market to be unemployed in for a while and once you find another position nobody's really going to care about it and I'm honestly questioning whether I should even put it on my resume going forward.

like

Yeah I'm honestly thinking of just leaving a gap there and if they don't ask about it great but if they do ask about it I'll tell them the truth

This happened to me as well but I resigned in under a year. I wonder if we had worked at the same NYC company. I feel like I have PTSD from the whole experience and it has taken over a year for the healing. Remember to be kind to yourself. Perhaps you can say in your next interview that the work cultures were not fully aligned or that Leadership principles were not strong match or that Leadership highly exercised oversight on a daily basis. Good luck with your search.

I feel this. It’s made me question my abilities and skills. I met with my old boss a week before it happened, and he reminded me that I am capable and know what I’m doing. I still find myself reading job descriptions and thinking that I can’t do that much, even though I have been. It’s a weird hit to the ego.

I don’t think I’d qualify. I’m barred in a state I used to live in and have only used single client admission in my current state. Never worked in a firm (only 3 years out) and don’t have super impressive academics.

Hope you are doing ok. The micromanager issue is always one that scares me.. did you ask about their managerial style during the interviews or didn’t ask and found out the hard way? Or worse, they said they were normal and actually a micromanager?

like

A good way to ferret this out is if you do things like ask for their reactions to certain situations or ask how they dealt with certain situations a micromanager is rarely going to have the self-awareness that they are annoying because otherwise they would change their behavior so you kind of need to find ways to get them to exhibit the behavior involuntarily

This is a tricky situation. You need to explain the situation truthfully to explain your exit but tread carefully. Speaking poorly about a past employer is a massive red flag because your potential new employer will think, “hey if this doesn’t work out are they going to talk this way about us?” They also might think you are making excuses for poor performance.

As others have mentioned it’s best to say things like it just wasn’t the right fit for me. I learned XYZ from this experience and now know what would be a good next position and great next company that would be a perfect fit for my skills and experience.

smart

What about not putting that job on your resume?

I thought about it, but at least for now I’m leaving it on. I’ll have to answer the question at some point anyway, and I have a reasonably good explanation and can use it to ask deeper questions.

What type of skill set do you have?

I tend to be a generalist, but have experience drafting and negotiating saas contracts in multiple flavors, IP, litigation management, and some M&A due diligence. I don’t have true privacy or employment matter experience, but have some experience that is very close.

Hello Everyone,

I interviewed at a product based company and went through all the rounds except the final HR round. The general consensus I got from the panel in the final round was that I have done well and HR will contact me. But a day later I get an email saying that my application has been put on hold after deliberation from the BU and they will reach out soon.

This is the first time I'm interviewing to change organizations so I am pretty confused if this means their way of rejection?

Interviewing for 4ish months now for a FED role. Always make it 2-3 rounds but never ending in an offer. I have a BFA in Web Design, but I wonder if it's worth returning to school for a Master's in Computer Science. I'm leery on bootcamps because they don't teach real world/practical use cases, at least the ones I've heard about. The firsthand(?) experience I have w/ a bootcamp grad, claims to be full stack but didn't know how to troubleshoot HTML/CSS, nor knew how to use Dev Tools/Inspector.
