Was planning on going to grad school in September (just received several acceptances). COVID is making me nervous. I don’t want to pay 💰 to do virtual classes. What’s the best way to think through?

I agree to think long term. And how long is the degree program? You might not have to do the whole thing online. Also for what it’s worth, Dr. Fauci thinks that kids will be able to go back to school in the fall, so there’s a decent chance that in person classes may be able to resume in the fall (with precautions I would imagine)

like

Think long term. Does it enhance your self worth and career? If so the let’s do it. How you react during this crisis could be an advantage. Imaging a prospective employer 5 years down the road ask you a question - how did you handle a difficult situation or how did you handle the crisis. You may have a good story to tell.

smart

Thanks for the responses. These are 1 or 2 year programs. Obviously, I feel it will impact my longer term prospects generally, as I spent the time applying, compiling references, etc. But do I think grad school in general has the same value if it’s all virtual? No, I don’t. 50% or more is being able to network. I could pursue a 1 year deferral I suppose. I just don’t want to put down a deposit of thousands of dollars and quit my job, only to find I’m in an apartment off campus 24/7 alone reading textbooks with no access to the school community

Following. In exact same situation

Makes sense. Good luck. Happy to chat more privately if you’d like

Can you defer acceptance? Doesn’t meet your goal but may mean no virtual classes.

I’m in the EXACT same boat! super stressed about it. I haven’t even been able to do an in person visit to one of my schools, so moving to a city I’ve never even been to and putting a deposit on an apt I won’t see in person is super stressful. I’m also going for a design engineering degree, aka it’s all hands on in the studio, and I’m wondering if it’s worth doing it virtually.

In the exact same position with a week to decide. I’m going to go ahead and enroll with the hope that classes will resume in the fall, but not sure how this will impact housing search. Also couldn’t tour schools so that is making the decision harder. Definitely feels like a risky move to be leaving my job and investing in grad school at this uncertain economic time, but I think I’ll be miserable if I stay and like you said, can’t bear spending time and $ to reapply

Suspect (hopefully) that corona won’t last past this year. Virtual classes aren’t ideal (currently doing them) but zoom hasn’t been too bad. I wouldn’t drag it out - if you graduate in 2022, might be in a good position to take advantage of a market rebound.

Long post alert. Also, confusing post alert haha. So, I'm going to be divorced in the next few months and have 2 kids who'll be with me. Ever since this situation has been finalized, I'm becoming very conscious of our spend & have been tight about it. Covid has helped. But I noticed that even my grocery store bills are pretty high...like a single run to Meijer is $125+. Costco is like $200 or so. We've always had fresh fruits, nuts liberally used in our house. Want to buy property in / near NYC. I know with covid prices in the city (I’m assuming the 5 boroughs) went down, while prices outside of the city went up. Is that enough of a move in the market to make it worth it to buy in the city (and not in Long Island for example)?

It's been around 14 weeks since I filed my tax returns along with a new ITIN application for my wife through an in person appointment at the local Chicago office. My profile is still not available on the "Where's my refund" page. Called the ITIN helpline couple weeks back and they said neither application was in the system yet and this could be due to covid processing delays. Anyone else facing lengthy delays for ITIN / tax refunds. Thanks!
