I’ve been hired by agencies freshly after their layoffs. It doesn’t necessarily mean they lied to you. Might mean they cleared what they saw as “overpriced” people and replaced them with cheaper staff who they’ll just overwork.
If you trust your manager was telling the truth — unfortunately, odds are this is exactly what happened. You’d think agencies would stop all the “culture” / “we’re a family” bullshit by now. So hard to swallow, smile, and nod when you’ve worked in the biz long enough to know truly how little you are valued in their eyes these days, no matter how much/little you actually contribute.
Keep this harsh truth in mind next time you are in a position to negotiate your next salary. Creatives are idealists so we like to pretend if we are talented enough, we’ll be rewarded. But more times than not, the bros rolling in cash are just more realistic about the industry + aren’t afraid to gamble channeling a lot of peacocking confidence and bravado in the up front to secure a higher starting rate (regardless of if they are really worth it or not … We *are* in the bullshitting biz after all).
And all those extra bumps shop to shop btwn lay offs and intentional hops add up to a nice chunk of change over a career when you factor in compound interest.
Grab the cash while you can, cause even if you win them a Grand Prix — finance will cut you without blinking if they feel like they smell an opportunity to save $3.58 off their YOY bottom lines. 🙄
Use your rightful frustration now in order to stick it to the industry later. For agencies to survive these days, you can bet 9/10 of them will treat you exactly the same.
Good news is - it’s prob not you! So don’t be afraid to get back out there. Chin up friend. On to better and brighter things. At the end of the day … at least we don’t have to fill out excel charts for a living? 💪🍻
From experience every time there’s a layoff it is followed by new hirings months later. Companies uses a round of necessary layoff as an opportunity to rearrange the staff.
They will not be completely transparent because anything that is not financial could be material for a wrongful termination case.
I suggest you to just move on.
Trying.
I got laid off and a week later, they asked me to go back part-time cos they realised they had no one to do the work and some briefs had come in. There’s nothing for you to learn here apart from there was a long-term financial decision made and in the next quarter, it’s a different one because the short-term conditions have changed. It’s not personal and nothing you could have done would have changed the outcome.
I told them to shove it by the way. You should metaphorically do the same. Walk away and do not look back.
They couldn’t do that even if they wanted, it would leave them open to legal challenges. It might seem like it’s self esteem, but really for me it comes down to knowing that companies will always act in their own self-interest, *everything* comes down to $$ and the absolute worst thing that the workers can do for their own mental health is to believe anything other than that. Being laid off sucks but it is part of working in adland so no one judges anyone it’s happened to. Everyone you respect and admire in advertising has had it happen to them. Probably more than once!
The most important thing right now is that you take the lesson from agencies’ self-interested behaviour and commit to always putting yourself first from here on in. Going back there would be like going back to an ex, and we all know what happens then 😉
If your confidence has taken a hit with what happened, do what you can to build yourself back up. Talk to someone about how you’re feeling. Zhuzh up your book, remember what you’ve done and achieved. Give yourself some credit and keep on keeping on.

Things change fast. "Not enough work" can become "too much work" with one new client.

That never happens. Don't take it personal. It just doesn't. No idea why because it would make sense but I guess they just don't like to re-hire people.
It’s probably less nefarious and calculated than you think.
Thank you.
I think some states have laws against hiring within a certain time period after laying off the same role. Might want to look into that.

Which agency?

Florida, Oregon or Texas is my guess

You can always ask for that, and usually they’ll tell you. But it depends on the HR person or your manager and whether theyve provided documented feedback on you.

Rough. Yeah then that’s kind of the end of the story. They’re not going to give you more than that.
Remember that people are just people. Maybe they got scared, overreacted and let you go. Then, they realized their mistake … how you were too important, and they need someone on in your shoes.
Exactly, don’t give those people too much credit.
