Watched the Chris Watts documentary and couldn’t get over the multi-leveling marketing aspect. Sat there asking myself how someone can invest thousands of dollars they don’t have into a BS business that’s ultimately a scam with no guarantee of actually making money, as if I didn’t basically do the same thing and as if I’m not sitting on $200k of law school debt.

Wow. So education is the same as MLM schemes?

On the Watts story, it’s a brutal example of how people can mess up their lives in every possible way. A few years before the murders watts was a chubby man with a nothing job, and uneducated wife working an hourly job, two little kids, and a bankruptcy. But I can’t imagine anyone projecting him as a triple murderer. Fast forward to 2018. He’s slim and fit, has a solid blue collar job in a booming business, lives in a nice suburb, has a nice young family, and to all appearances is doing great. But he and his wife are both living lies - they both are living way beyond their means, she’s chasing financial ghosts with the MLM thing, he’s shacking up with a coworker, and they somehow end up with another child on the way even though their marriage is crumbling. And through it all she’s presenting the family on Facebook as though they are living the dream. People will be psychoanalyzing the case for years, but even with all the weirdness the final act of smothering two little girls and strangling a pregnant woman with your bare hands is really hard to get your head around. The documentary is called American Murder: The Family Next Door. It’s worth a look.

I need to do a backdoor Roth IRA - A question I have is do I need to do the full $6000 contribution limit up front, or can I do a portion, convert it, and then continue to contribute throughout the year?

Also once it is converted can I contribute to that same account in future years?

Thanks!

My fiancé got me a $50K Cartier ring and even though he could technically afford it (he made over $1M last year), I feel a little bad. I might propose returning it and get something comparable from eg the clear cut for <50% the price and put that money into the wedding (which will surely be at least 80K). Any thoughts? Will I regret this?

I know people have asked in here how to go in house. After getting an in house job, I think my best tip is to get an internal referral. This is way easier than I thought. Since employees get paid for referrals if they get hired, usually they are very likely to give you one. Reach out to people on LinkedIn (even if you don’t know them) and ask if they have a referral program!! I did this and within a matter of hours had an interview lined up.

Looking to switch from government to private practice after 12 years. Any insights into the best resources for salary and billable requirements for firms in the KC are?

like

I’m looking for advice re: billing. I’m a baby lawyer and just started at a firm that’s had a fair amount of turnover. As a result, I inherited some messy files where documents aren’t labeled. Sometimes it takes me 10 minutes to just find the complaint, searching through years of emails until I find it by chance. I know people on here say to bill everything, but how do I label that when entering time? Just loop it in with “review file” and hope nobody asks why it took me so long?

So just wondering. I had 2 years of primarily transactional experience out of school. I was assigned something where I drafted a complaint. I asked if I could take a look at a previous complaint on the law firm shared drive and they looked at me like I was a complete idiot. I wasn't planning on just copying the whole thing i just know that typically for routine things sometimes there's a complaint that's been drafted before and I could use it so I don't reinvent the wheel. Off base?

Is it legal to dock pay, bonuses and/or origination payouts if billable time isn’t entered on time? Firm is threatening a 3 strike rule. Just seems off if you work for the money (it’s calculated based on rates/hours/business brought in) that they could threaten you this way. Firing? I understand that. I’m in Pennsylvania if that makes a difference.
