It's an incredible film. But agree with the mixed feelings. The ending can be interpreted two different ways.
I think it achieved its desired effect.
Exactly OP, those are the kinds of questions the movie makes you ask yourself, and I believe that was its goal.
The message that it sent. I mean is it really ok to let work and passion overpower you like that? Or is it ok@to have an unhealthy mentor relationship like that? Or is passion the end all of everything? Brilliant acting and an incredible movie nonetheless

Loved the movie, and recommend it, but I had mixed feelings as well
What were your mixed feelings, exactly? About whether or not it's a great film, or whether you were happy/sad at the end of it?
Meh. I have mixed feelings about many films. Charlie and chocolate factory, Truman show, etc. what's so unique about whiplash. Seems pretty cut and dry
According to the writer, the movie's ending is about succumbing to addiction. It's very negative and should be viewed as a cautionary tale. Damien chazelle almost put a postscript at the end saying that the main character died at age 30 of a drug overdose.
P2 The latter. I think it was an amazing film, just not sure whether I was happy or sad at the end. More like exhausted emotionally, but for a good reason, if that makes any sense.
Incredible movie. Makes you think whether some of that abuse was self-inflicted, all because he wanted to be GREAT.
