I just posted about this somewhere else, but I had a baby who measured extremely small for most of the second and third trimester. I was freaked but was all fine. Normal is a huge range, ultrasounds are notoriously inaccurate, and growth charts are actually not that useful for determining if you’ve got a healthy baby or not. Sure I’d listen to your doctor and monitor things closely and all that. But I wouldn’t unnecessarily worry (I know easier said than done). It sounds like they are likely monitoring for IUGR- which even if she has will still almost definitely lead to a healthy baby.
Second all of this!
I had very similar measurements at 34 weeks. The thing is that those US measurements can be +/- 20% and doctors will always err on the side of caution. I was told weekly growth monitoring was too quick of an interval because of the 20% tolerance, but I did go in for non-stress tests 2x week (basically counting kicks) and growth scans every other week after 34 weeks. Ended up getting induced due to high BP at 39 and everything was perfectly fine, the baby was 7lb 4oz! About as average as you can get. This whole process is so different person to person and doctor to doctor. Just trust your instincts and remember that the doctors are being overly cautious for that small chance something is actually wrong. And even if something is wrong now, 33 weeks is far enough along to have a baby with no lasting health problems ☺️
There’s a big range of normal, from 10-90 percentile so I wouldn’t worry too much. I was measuring small at 20 weeks (11%) and my doctor told me not to worry. I came in 4 weeks later and was up to 18%.
I had a similar experience. My uterus started measuring small at 26 weeks (dropped from measuring 50th percentile to 6th percentile) , and so OB ordered weekly ultrasounds and monitoring. At each ultrasound baby still measured small, but everything else looked good. Ultrasound doctor even said “I think you have a small baby because he’s meant to be small and nothing is wrong.” Because I had received a diagnosis of IUGR, OB was really pushing for an induction. I didn’t really want one, but agreed to one at 39 weeks. Baby was healthy and not even that small (6 pounds, 4 ounces)! Best wishes for you and your wife!
No need to stress. After 34 weeks my midwife doesn’t recommend growth scans bc they are not accurate. They will likely suggest non stress tests 1-2x/wk and weekly fluid checks to monitor. Mom needs to stay hydrated because that impacts fluid levels.
Quick update - wife is 36 weeks today, fluids have now been normal for 3 weeks. Most recent measurements showed baby’s head at 21 percentile but abdomen came in at <1 percentile (basically hasn’t changed in 2 weeks). Baby is still breach. Doing NST twice a week and doctors are recommending early c-section anytime now and no later than week 37. We want to get as close to week 39 as possible but obviously not at the detriment of the baby. All NST readings have been good so far, vitals are good, only odd-ball is the abdomen size. Still a mystery as to why but we are trusting the doctors with the assessment.
Could it be because the baby is breech and they cannot measure abdomen properly
