I was thinking about this Sunday funny enough, and I completely agree. It’s a shortsighted, disrespectful and arrogant opinion coming from people who probably could never do half of what our ancestors did to put us where we are today.

When I’ve seen people say this I think they mean they will not refrain from whooping your *** or will not act in a peaceful manner if you cross them.

PM1 - I have never used the phrase. I have no dogs in this fight.
I agree with OP. It is a statement uttered in arrogance by people who THINK they would’ve been able to handle the consequences that came from black people confronting racism back in the day.
The very threat of black people daring to rise up led to families being lynched, slaves being maimed, towns being burned, children being firehosed, churches being bombed, mob violence being justified in courthouses....ok🙄
I recall my great uncle saying he always swore he would’ve had my cousin integrate a school. Then he met the Little Rock 9. And the stories they told of how they were treated AS CHILDREN SIMPLY MINDING THEIR BUSINESS AND GOING TO SCHOOL shook him. He now says that there’s no way he would’ve put his baby girl thru that, knowing he couldn’t be beside her everyday.
Yeah. Having a slick tongue like a real housewife does not mean you would’ve been ready for that kind of smoke. Folks talk big until they are in it.

I know a lot of people take offense to this phrase but thats not how I receive it. To me it says were tired of the more peaceful approach some of our ancestors took (NOT all) and will start physically fighting back or in other words whoop your ass for your racist indiscretions.. i get why you would be offended tho if when you hear this phrase you think more of the Malcom X and Black Panther party type ancestors etc.
Rising Star
No, im offended either way. Peaceful or militant, Martin or Malcom, it doesn't matter, both are to be respected. Let's be clear, they were both murdered. Peaceful protestors and Black panthers were murdered and lynched alike. At the end of the day, any violence or fallout would've always impacted Black ppl more, so I empathize with the logic and burden of both approaches. Again, our struggles and the threat of violence today do not compare, so let's not disrespect the ppl who paved the way for us, pretending like we're some modern day Black superheroes.

We can’t even galvanize the courage to collectively organize and strike from work in consulting, despite most of us hating it here. Instead, we talk about “playing the game” - so yeah, we aren’t our ancestors at all lol.
Rising Star
Right, you feel me
I see it from both standpoints. In actuality, we arent though. They had their tactics, these last couple of generations has their own. Its a different style of fight because the fight itself has changed. Either way the intention is not to be disrespectful its more about telling racists that forget all that you were taught about our people, when you run up, expect these hands. We tried the MLK way, it didnt work.

Chille.
We are not as WOKE as we think they are.
MLK is still very close to our generation. He would have been 91 years now.
The problem is people thinking they are removed from their ancestors.
