Cover it with puppy pads / rugs you don’t care about. Throw them away. Repeat. That’s the only way, I’m afraid. But who cares, it’s SO WORTH IT!!!
I have a bissell spot cleaner, also use something like Nature’s Miracle spray to remove odors so they won’t try to eliminate in the same spot again. Prevention is key, rough rule of thumb I’ve heard of how long they can hold it is one hour per month of age when they are puppies. For example, if they are 2 months, expect them to hold it only 2 hrs. Crate training will also help teach them with potty training since they don’t want to dirty their den.
Lots of paper towels... take your dog out FREQUENTLY to potty train and when they have mistakes on the rug just dab it with paper towels and then spray with a pet pee/poop spray... works like a charm
I actually have older dogs who are having potty trouble now. If you can swing the cost, look into ruggable. You can throw them in the washing machine.
I have an elderly dog as well (and elderly cats). We havepuppy pads in certain places and by the back door bought a ruggable. So far it's worked. Also have had to get a nicer rug professionally cleaned a few times.
Ruggable is pretty thin, but it does work. It's a little hard to get back on after washing..sometimes takes two of us to smooth it out.

+1 request for Ruggable review....
Consider getting cheap rugs to put of your carpet and limit puppy’s access to just those spaces. Get high quality spray for accidents and be prepared to pay for a carpet cleaning (it is inexpensive to DIY with the rental machines)
Second A1. If you have any expensive rugs put them away for a couple months. Guaranteed they will chew something expensive and shit all over something else in the first 4 months.
But you gotta love that puppy face!
My mom and I swear by rug doctor - that stuff is serious magic!!
@AD1 - do you have a ruggable???? I’m so fascinated but haven’t heard any 1st hand reviews
You should crate train your pup. It will help with potty training her.
If it’s a boy getting a belly band so they will just pee on that, and crate training for sure
Thank you guys ! This is super helpful !
