We as teachers are not supposed to tell our students what to think, we are supposed to teach our students how to think. To do this, we need to try our best to keep our political opinions and our personal thoughts on issues out of the classroom.

So how does one exactly do this when the loyalty pledge to a symbol of the state plays at the beginning of the day? The reality is that there is an underlying political agenda which is thrust into our classrooms and imposed on every public school student and staff every single day. If you are a Libertarian or a Humanist or an AntiNationalist or an AntiImperialist or if you are an Indigenous person or an Atheist or if you feel that in some way that the state does not represent you then you are forced into a political stance. So it is not the individual that brought politics into the classroom, rather it was the status quo since McCarthyism.

I strive to have an open and safe classroom and opinions are welcome and tolerated. I tell my students I will give them my opinion if they ask, and it is just that, my opinion. I encourage them to question and research for themselves and they are welcome to disagree with me or their classmates. I don’t see anything wrong in this approach with upper secondary students. I do see harm in silence.

Middle school isn’t high school. I understand that it would be harder to be open with the younger students.

I do separate my political views from classroom discussion, but my thoughts and feelings are a part of who I am. To remove them would make me into a robot.

I didn't say that I should be able to share my beliefs. I said that I cannot separate my beliefs from who I am. You made the leap that I am going around and making people listen to my thoughts alone. I listen to my students. I ask qualifying questions. I get them to talk with me frankly and honestly. If that is unprofessional, then so be it. I know that when I close the door, I am the adult in the room, and that I must act responsibly toward my students. That is my job as an educator. My job as an educator is also to help them learn to think things through--to help them have facts and reasons for their opinions.

I agree but I will not say anything that could make my students of color or LGBTQ students feel unwelcome or unloved. It’s unfortunate that being considerate of others is a political point these days.

likeupliftinghelpful

Well said. Supporting our most vulnerable students and ensuring they know they are safe in our classrooms is essential. *Opinions* that dehumanize other people are a form of violence and are never tolerated in my room.

Politics is a major player in classrooms today, like it or not. “You can’t use that book because it uses the n-word.” “You can’t discuss racism and how it plays a factor in society today.” “Sorry, I can’t even answer that question without fear of losing my job; let’s move on.” “Oops. Gotta redo my lesson plan because I was going to mention how sexism plays a part in how much money women make even though it ties into that story.” “What do I think about ____? No, I am not allowed to give my opinion.” Yes, we absolutely need to teach students how to think for themselves. At the same time, aren’t many students looking for role models to help them through life that they do not have at home? And for those who do have parental role models, are parents that worried about how thinly they have taught their values, or are they worried that their children will develop their own thoughts that may be different from their own? I suspect it is the latter that so many parents are worried about and thus try to muzzle teachers.

like

Many students are looking for role models, but I feel as teachers, we should not push our political opinions on them. Be a good person and be nice to people, that is the role model they need.

I was once told by a veteran teacher that if my students know my political beliefs I have failed as a teacher and I completely agree. It is NOT our job to give them our opinions. It is our job to teach them to think for themselves and analyze information. It’s obvious that there are a lot of teachers (as I read the comments) that can’t do that successfully so there you go…

In my area, my political opinion is wore on my face. 🤷🏻‍♀️ No hiding that.

likehelpful

MMS1 I do try to provide various sides to every case. I am in a rural, conservative area. I am choosing to wear a mask. That in itself screams that so am a liberal lol. I remember reading a story from our district approved text book last year. My kids freaked out that the main character wasn’t a christian. I had to have the discussion that there are many religions and at the core they they all have the fundamental rule of being kind to each other. I have also had to balance the opinions about immigration with the kids who have families that are opposed and kids who have family members here illegally. It’s a tight rope to walk and not offend anyone.

likeupliftingsmarthelpful

Also, with the way logic works, if you give students the tools they need to think about a REAL world problem they will usually come to a consensus on the solution. That solution can be a political opinion, and by teaching your students to think you have inadvertently imposed your beliefs on them (by some people’s standards).

Agreed… While at the same time, NOT building false equivalences between the current state of these two political parties…

likehelpful

I strongly agree. What’s needed is to be the Compas or Mirror in front of our students, let them decide for themselves. Use Critical Thinking.

likehelpful

I respectfully disagree. While the classroom is not a space for canvassing for candidates, it’s essential to model for our students how to have conversations with people who disagree with us, how to resolve conflict, and most importantly to recognize that a person’s politics is not their entire persona…. It also helps our students avoid falling into patterns of confirmation bias…

like

I’m all about teaching students how to have conversations with people they disagree with and explains to students that someone’s politics aren’t their entire lives…. But I do not need to throw my political opinions into the mix in the classroom. Many students look to us as role models. I don’t want my political opinions making an impact on them. I show them how to be nice to others and teach them about respect. But it’s not my job to tell them what to think.
