Wow! I agree though, there are some abusing the system.
The system is abusing US!
Taking care of yourself is the most important thing to be doing right now!!
And at the same time, I bet your district has a “self-care” focus.
I’m tired of mindfulness. I need support staff and time to do my job.
Take the time your given no matter the reason
Sorry but the hell with what your admin says. You have the time take off!
Incentivize attendance with money rewards. Put your money where you mouth is. We don’t get combat pay even though we’re on the front line. This is a different time in U S education history. We’re continuing to teach throughout a plague. Those same administrators are usually out more than any teaching staff member. That’s poor leadership. Don’t yell at or piss off the people that are there. Dumb and dumber.
LOL “really donkey” wtf???
It was supposed to read “...well enough once to be RESPONSIBLE to teach/supervise kids.”
Sorry - it’s not letting me edit
How awful. We’re fortunate. Our support staff says “if you need it, take it”. They get the stress. So we carry each other. Creates a strong climate. It will come back on them.
I was at a school in San Francisco many years ago and the principal encouraged mental health days. I miss those days
We've gone through the same thing . We finally hired a few new subs so we can get our preps back. My admin needs to have a conversation with people they think are abusing their days (even though they are entitled to them). My husband and I both have 300 days each of sick leave banked.
NJ we are indeed entitled to them: “truly need” and “truly sick” are both open to interpretation.
If Ohio decided they don’t feel ok, needed a mental health day, and wanted to use 1 or more of the 300 days (!!!) they have banked, more power to them.
Our district raised the pay to 50.00 for subbing on your prep. Not too hard to fill now when there is no sub.
Our district does not pay us when we cover on our prep. Fortunately our building admin. doesn't expect us to do that. In fact, she covers lunch duties so assistants can cover classes when necessary.
These are problems that were here before Covid. These same administrators were dropping these same guilt bombs. We have had a sub shortage for 5 years. These problems exist across the U. S. Before Covid I was of the opinion that teachers across the U. S. should stage a nation wide strike. We are under paid, don't get over time pay, more and more work is being placed on us with out the salary increase we deserve. Many teachers work two jobs to support their families. Why is this acceptable?
I am sure our admin are frustrated and stressed, but they haven’t taken it out in us.
Same thing here - they don’t want you take time off but want us to focus on self-care — soooo hard to find a balance during your his pandemic…
Also, it’s not your fault if you actually do get sick, or your kids get sick, or you have to quarantine. It’s actually being considerate of your colleagues to stay home if you’re sick! It’s like “You’re damned if you do, and you’re damned if you don’t!” Lol!
I believe that teachers should be considerate of their fellow colleagues. Everyone is fighting the same fight. If teachers take off and it was unnecessary, someone else has to cover that class. I’m sorry, but I have worked with a lot of inconsiderate teachers.
I have had an exceptionally difficult year with family and health issues. I had days banked, but I just recently found out that I need a surgery that will put me out for 6 weeks, and I’m already at only 7 days left (I’ll be dipping into our district’s FMLA bank while I’m out). I have a good long term sub taking over (thank goodness). I feel terrible because when I’m at work, I’m so far behind in EVERYTHING that I need every minute I can get, so I don’t step in for others. It’s so frustrating for me - like a never ending push-pull of guilt about my current personal needs and my fellow teachers stepping in for me. Sometimes, it seems there are no good answers. I love my job, but I’m so burnt at both ends that I feel like I’m going up in flames!
Part of the reason I need my time off is because I'm tired of covering for all the other teachers that are taking time off. Bit of a catch 22. I do believe that some of the reasons for leave can be a bit excessive though.
Ha! Usually this message is paired with the "be sure to check yourself for covid symptoms before you come to work and stay home if you think you may have it." You can't have it both ways.

Wow, that’s sad & a mean thing to say. That person seems very stressed out. Sometimes people have to work together, be kind to others, and accept others too, when things like this happen. Employees want to work better/harder when they are appreciated, not yelled at.
I feel the school I’m working at, they have been much more flexible with sick days & sometimes not even asking why you’re out. Even when we are very short staffed. I mean they should appreciate the staff that has stayed, since many people have been fired because they didn’t get the vaccine.
I’m unclear about your statement- you said you had a Professional Development Day and took it off. What is a PD for special education teachers in a different location and you attended that which then led to colleagues needing to cover your classes? Or; was it a scheduled PD day at your school and you didn’t show up for work? Was your absence approved as a personal day or something to that effect? Just this week we had a PD Day and we were allowed a paperwork day plus we attended portions of PD which kept us in the loop. Additionally we had time to meet with our special education colleagues. It was a beneficial day. Most importantly, during PD days at our school student do not attend school. N coverage needed. In conclusion; I would encourage you to find a way to participate as able. At the same time it is highly unprofessional to be yelled at by administration! Uncalled for and non effective- best to you.
Sorry we got yelled at for taking off other days not the professional development day
Yelled at for taking off the PD day? Or yelled at for taking days, in general. I’m an aide so we have even less sick days. At our measly hourly we are also shown no empathy and are reprimanded by principal because then there’s no one to cover lunch-recess.
