We have had an extremely tough start to the year. I am second guessing my decision to continue teaching (year 20). What are some options for teachers that don’t involve the classroom or direct sale

I have the same issue. I have begun the process of detaching from the profession. I already have a personal rule about not taking work home. Now my rule is to only use paid time to do any school related work. That means if it can’t be done in the time allotted (conference period) then it doesn’t get done. If it takes 3 weeks to grade 200 essays then that’s what it takes. I triage everything- planning always comes first, then grading, then parent contact. I will no longer give this job anymore of my life. I am fully present and available for students, but not for this job. I’m currently looking into other teaching opportunities outside of the school system. There is just not enough support and it is not sustainable. I love the work- the art of teaching, the craft of engaging student and facilitating a learning environment, working with students and other amazing teachers! But I simply cannot tolerate the job- the myriad of extra duties, the checkmark supports and interventions that are hopelessly ineffective, the lack of respect for the work we do. I could go on, but I won’t because I am so done. Never thought I’d be here.

Nailed it. I’m so sad to see our school feel like a sinking ship. There is absolutely no reason MY own children should be affected by the actions of my students at school. It’s so hard to detach because from 7-3 it’s nonstop behaviors issues with little to no support from admin. Then throw in the zillion other responsibilities. I come home so upset and my girls get the brunt of it.

I am at year 13 and I am in the same boat. I love teaching but the lack of respect from kids (not all), parents, and admin is really bothering me a lot these last few years, not to mention the countless other things we are expected to do. I am always stressed and that is just not healthy for anybody.

I hear you! I’m at year 14 and I didn’t expect teaching to be this stressful. Schooling didn’t prepare me for all of the paperwork that is required for this profession. Not only that the way teachers are being stretched out so thin it’s exhausting. It’s definitely not healthy emotionally, physically, or mentally.

Find another position in your county that doesn’t require working with kids constantly. (i.e. instructional site facilitators, literacy coaches , etc.)

Online Public Schools

You have to look at which ones are in your area. In California, we have California Virtual Academy or CAVA. I know teachers that have taught for this program and love it.

Need sometime to process together, get some SEL, be face to face social again, etc. Just wondering if districts out there have gotten a head start on this task.

I feel like there is an easier way to do this on line learning. Same grade teachers at the same school should be one big group. For example: One teacher has the discussion or lecture and does the presentation to all classrooms. One teacher mans the computer to answer questions that come in and handles any tech issues. Another teacher grades assignment and takes role and handles the admin part. Wouldn’t this be easier? Teachers could rotate or just stay in one role.
