We just brought a guy onto our team who specializes in Data Science and Machine Learning.

He's really the only guy on our BI team who has studied it and can do the work. Existing members of the team are interested in furthering their analytical skills and learning Machine Learning, but the new guy seems pretty closed off to showing them his work or teaching them.

The guy has worked hard; he went to top 10 schools for undergrad and grad, and has openly mentioned that the sacrifice...cont

This person sounds like they have some serious problems. I’ve never heard of anything like this. The idea of not sharing knowledge in a data science team is totally insane.

likefunny

Was he hired to train the team? I know that sounds harsh but I'm trying to empathize with him. Maybe he feels he's being asked to manage a team without the pay or title. It's also worth mentioning that teaching data science is not just some single course your employees can take. If you want to make your employees more data literate, consider buying an enterprise subscription to DataCamp.

This was my thought too...yeah I agree that it's a hard stance to take but I think it's important to consider what you're asking of him and how that fits within the remit of his role. He's not there to be a free teacher ultimately, and it might just be adding to his workload?

like

he made to learn what he learned in those programs shouldn't just be given away to members of the team who didn't study the same material, and don't have graduate degrees. He mentioned that 'real Data Science' isn't something you can just pick up on the job, and that it requires rigorous educational programs.

I understand where he's coming from ins one sense, but it also just leaves bad taste in my mouth that he's closed off and not willing to give people a chance.

Can anyone give their perspective on the situtaion? Whether it's in support of his stance or against it? Would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

I love rice, eat it almost once week (significantly cut down from eating it almost every day as a child through college 😅) so switching to cauliflower rice is a challenge since texture and taste wise, I just KNOW it’s not rice. Usually eat it with seasoned chicken and veggies. I like regular cauliflower but for some reason, riced cauliflower has a stronger cauliflower taste for me?
