We just sent home MAP scores from the spring test and I have parents wanting to conference about them. We have 2 days left of school. Any input on if I should actually meet or just try and discuss over email? Seems redundant when there’s not much else to be done this year...

I would give them an availability time that coincides with your prep times or suggest that the questions could be answered by email. For example “ Absolutely Ms Smith I am available to meet Monday or Tuesday between 11:45-12:45”. 😀

"Yes, Mrs Jones. I am currently available Tuesdays from 11:07 to 11:13 am"

I would met with them for a specified amount of time say 15 minutes and discuss one area of strength and one challenge from the assessment connected to their child. Then give the parent 3 ways to assist their child in improving in that area during summer recess. Keep it short and sweet.

I agree with addressing the parental concerns. You will have encouraging words for next year, how parents can help their kids over break, and generally give them benefit of a caring, knowledgeable professional. This is the parents’ expression of respect for you and your insight. Celebrate that (even angry parents blaming the school, you, and anyone except themselves.), and honor them by honoring yourself. Take pride in your skill and insight!

Could you offer to meet virtually - zoom or Google meet for a set window (10 minutes)

Then you could potentially get in 2 or three meetings in one prep hour.

May I ask, which report you sent home?

Most of the time, in my experience, the parent needs help reading the report. I like the family report because it specifically shows the percentile but also the amount of growth for each area.

If that is not the report you sent initially I would try sending that in a correspondence and follow up with......

“Yes, I would be happy to schedule a conference to discuss <insert child’s name> Spring MAP data. I have availability by phone or Zoom during: ______ (only put the time you have for the next two days). Also, I am attaching the Family MAP report. After reviewing, please let me know of any specific questions, concerns, or feedback that you may currently have. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, _______”

Hopefully this will help drive out any specific questions they have so either you can tackle it in an email or use the information to help you prepare for the meeting.

I'd prioritize meeting with parents of students who scored low or low average to offer tips on what those students can do over the summer to improve reading skills.

You could always use zoom...

Email. Keep short and precise

Call them. Have ideas for what those students need to work on. That’s what they want to know.

Gosh that’s tough. We know how long parent teacher conferences take and you only have 2 days! Do what you can and maybe they can meet with the principal to explain how to read the score if you don’t have time to reach everyone.

I was baffled by expectations from this year from admin and some parents. This is the year to give them a break and review through summer with your child. Not finger point and yell.

I am in totally agreement to calling or email the parents! Meeting in person may be rough!

I would schedule 1-Zoom meeting for general questions and knowledge. Any personal questions send via email - this way you can choose to answer or not.

Email

That's a tough one. I do not want to necessarily conference about them because we do not really do anything with the scores. I wish they impacted what we teach more. But I can see why a good parent would want to discuss the scores, because they want to make sure thier kid is where they need to be and what they can do better. I think MAP testing needs to be made more important or we should stop doing the tests.
