We live in the Metro Detroit area and our 6 month old has eczema. I fly to client locations and my wife works from home. So we are looking for the best place (climate) to relocate to so we can help our baby beat his condition before it gets worse. Not too dry, not too humid. I need to be close to a well connected airport. Plus a progressive place would be better for us as we are first gen immigrants. Would like to stay in EST, with CST being the second preference. Any suggestions?

I have been in your shoes when our new born got eczema around similar age as your kid . We are in Chicago, so kind of similar weather . Following is what helped : 1 . Make the kid wear only cotton . No fleece or anything synthetic . Even kid playing on carpet and carpet touching skin causes issue for some. 2. Use Acquaphor liberally and multiple times a day. Emily is another cream which helped but it’s quite expensive . Acquaphor and Emily did it for us. 3. If possible get water softener and water purifier installed for bath water. Before getting softener installed we used to buy distilled water from Grocerry store for kid’s bath. 4. Too much heat and wrapping in blankets , hot water baths followed by dry heated air together triggers this auto immune issue . Try to keep the kid cool. Kid’s bath should not be too hot or cold & use humidifier, we still use two of them running in bedroom along with a central . I don’t think you need to move just because of this issue , it’s solvable. For many kids it’s becomes ok as they age . You need to identify and avoid what causes the flare up until then .

Oh my God! Thank you. Everything you said makes so much sense. I’ll definitely try all of these tips. Honestly, if these tips end up helping my kid, I’m sending you a gift basket. 😊

I have eczema sometimes and it’s always been a winter thing in the Northeast / Midwest. Humidity tends to be lower in the first place when it’s cold (dew point, not relative humidity which actually doesn’t matter much), and indoor heating tends to dry out the air even more. Showers and hot baths also strip moisture from your skin. Lukewarm baths are better and moisturize. And if that’s really not enough and you want a different climate, I’d look for a warmer climate where you don’t need as much indoor heating. I wouldn’t worry as much about the outdoor humidity.

The weather isn’t different enough from Detroit to matter. I’ve lived in both areas and my eczema was about the same.

I’m confused. Did your son’s doctor indicate that Detroit’s climate/allergens were causing the issue? If so, did they indicate regions that might be better?

Thanks for the vote of confidence bud. Appreciate it. But I am sorry to hear about the desi kid burn out statistics. I hope it gets better soon. I hope folks realize that good grades might guarantee a job but there are a million other ways to become financially successful in the US. We are lucky to have this perspective because my wife has three uncles, all entrepreneurs, with 7 figure incomes none of whom did well in school. And here I am with my miserly Deloitte salary and perfect grades and perfect attendance all through my school years. 🤷🏻‍♂️😊

Pittsburgh. Seriously underrated city. Excellent healthcare options, very progressive, lots of cultural pursuits, and very affordable cost of living.

“Excellent healthcare options” …if you don’t mind having to deal with UPMC, that is.

If the question is about access to top notch medical facilities, Atlanta, Boston, or Cleveland would meet your needs (in roughly that order). If you want a humid climate, try Miami, Atlanta, Tampa, Charlotte, or DC

like

Also Houston for both

What weather are you looking for that you think will help? Asking as someone who has eczema until I was almost 10 (grew up outside of Boston) - I would have thought the humidity would help, but it didn't. I have heard that the salty air by the ocean can help, though I don't know why it does.

Same! I found Tampa to help the most from a location I have worked at in the last 10 years

Arlington VA, NYC&NJ, Boston, Charlotte NC,

Added some clarification to my question. Looking for better weather, not medical care. Too much humidity is just as bad for eczema as really dry weather like that in Detroit. So something in between. Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana might have great weather, while being in EST/CST, but the fanaticism of the last 4 years really make us nervous about moving to these states. So we have to look for some place north to these states. Also both my wife and my ancestors are from the southern part of India. We both grew up there too. So warmer weather might suit our baby better than colder weather.

Louisville Ky fits the bill.

Dallas is kind of in the middle of dry and humid although has a lot of allergens in the air. I would not worry about being Indian in Texan cities or even suburbs. Texas is getting bluer every year. Austin also a progressive option with a lot of tech opportunities but a bit drier.

Eczema can be weird for people, some people say it's better in humid conditions, others feel that sweating in humid conditions makes it worse and prefer dry. If the latter, look at Denver, liberal progressive city and usually top 5 to raise a kid, plus their airport is within three-ish hours of every major city and third busiest in the country with a direct flight everywhere

East coast climate was fine for me growing up with eczema. In contrast humid summers in Asia made it way worse. As others mentioned I would focus on cotton, unscented gentle soap, aquaphor etc.

Maybe get an Ayurvedic assessment for the baby? It could be dietary. I’m also an immigrant and the American food is the worst. It’s full of chemicals and it already starts with how it’s grown.

My 11month old had eczema months 3-9. Comes and goes. It does not bother babies. Very common with infants. Gets better as weeks progress. Speak with your peds if you want them prescribe a mild steroid cream for the condition. No need to move.

I've found that healthy lifestyle fixes my eczema. Diet, exercise, good sleep, good soaps and moisturizer, getting some sun, etc.

We lived in NYC and our son had pretty bad eczema (3 years old in July). We moved last Oct to Seattle and it’s all but gone now. We suspect it was more about the pollution than the humidity but that also didn’t help. Seattle is amazing but is PT. Staying east the first places that spring to mind are DC, Raleigh and Boston. Good luck.
