Snarky comments about the French/ Europeans having a much healthier balance between work and rest is neither here nor there - the real trouble is that Aukus increases the likelihood of a confrontation with China. For a supposed reader of history, Boris forgets the run up to the First World War, and the Americans won’t accept they are a declining power, and clearly doing all it can to stymie China’s rise to the world’s superpower. When are we going to stop voting myopic politicians with flawed thinking - war is peace, ignorance is strength, freedom is slavery…

Pakistani-operated SSNs are a folly because their expected theatre of operations is the Indian Ocean. You don’t need long range for that. India just finished a 10 year lease on an SSN. The rest of their sub fleet are diesel-electric, some AIP. They may get a few SSNs in the next decade for longer range missions against China. So not a smart play for Pakistan to operate nuclear subs. They’d rather just find a way to launch a ballistic missile at India from their SSKs.

Let’s be honest, we all know that contracts go over budget because the client asks for more. I’d guess the cultural differences didn’t help, but the real issues were the huge budget growth, probably because of how much the Aussies insisted on building in Australia, a cost that neither side adequately understood until they both agreed on it in principle and started making it happen.

This is hilarious. Imagine showing up 15 minutes late to every client meeting and then being upset when they fire you.

likefunny

Cultural norms differ. Neither is inherently wrong, but they should have been smart enough on both sides to respect those differences and mediate damage.

likefunny

But are they happy and healthy ?

likefunny

A1, more importantly, did they ever care to ask?

I don’t think we should be looking down our noses at other countries WLB. Let’s just take our fatter paychecks and die an earlier death and be happy with it.

like

Well, what did the SOW say?

likefunny

SOW said 33B but france made it 66 B and lost the contract

like

An important detail is that the Aussies will now get nuclear subs. Diesel subs are less useful in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Nuclear ones are faster, can travel further, and stay submerged longer. If you want to harass Chinese shipping from a base in Australia (let’s be honest, that is what this is about) then nuclear is the way to go.

😂 . Op, thanks for sharing. “French officials in return were likewise said to be surprised that Australian officials expected meetings to begin on time, citing a French phenomenon known as a "diplomatic 15 minutes" whereby people were considered to be on time as long as they arrived within 15 minutes of the start time”

Yes. Its hilarious. “Diplomatic 15”

This move was sparked by geopolitics, not by goddamn summer vacations. Anyone suggesting otherwise is just foolish.

The French have a saying by their philosopher, Renaud, "Work, is not for us." Vive La Socialisme!

Let here is not the difference in culture or long vacations… but lack of communication and business continuity plans…

This is too good to be true.. While it is surely a European culture on prioritizing life over work, that can’t be a reason that makes headlines for not getting the deal.

Well this has everything that typically causes the deals to go off. Budget is doubled after 3 long years of negotiation. France refusing to manufacture in australia, delay and then the culturual differences. Its like your flight is already late by 6 hours and then pilot says its his nap time so another 7 hours wait
