We recently found out that our daughter has a genetic condition that may lead to intellectual disability as she grows older. Obviously, the news changed everything for us and my wife decided to leave her job and stay with our daughter full-time. Her career was always very important but she is also a Mother and wants to prioritize this situation over her career. I believe leaving work might impact her, so want to instead explore extended leave options in California due to child issues? Insights?

I have a child with a disability also, and when we first found out I felt like I had to quit also. I think that is a very normal feeling. However, I did not and I am very thankful for it. A few things to consider: - how much does she need your care specifically on a day to day basis, versus specialists and others who know what to do. This is important, because although you want to be around, she may benefit more from licensed professionals who can help her in ways you can’t. Just make sure your being home doesn’t take away from that. - what is your financial situation? To get the best care and provide the best opportunities for your daughter is going to cost you. I was able to not think twice about certain procedures and therapists because we could afford it. Had that not been the case, it would’ve made the whole situation tougher. - how demanding is your wife’s job? Is she able to go on a reduced schedule? I would consider starting with that and see how it goes, and then decide to either dial it up or down later as you reassess. Unfortunately most of these things are life long situations, so you have to learn a way to live with it that works best for you (and that may mean quitting your job). For me, I think trying to keep everything else in my life as normal as possible has helped deal with the challenges something like this brings your way. Good luck OP, you guys sound like amazing parents and you will be fine!

Thanks, this is inline with how I was thinking about it but I am unable to respond to your other questions because this specific condition may vary by each case, everyone on the spectrum faces a different set of challenges, and the disorder is very rare (One in 50k), so we do not know what to expect in the near to long term, but I appreciate you taking the time out to comment. Financial situation isn’t a problem, so can we go above and beyond with care and we already are, we are not replacing any of the professionals time with our time, but managing that also takes a lot of effort.

Has anyone ever tried “opting out” of the sex, race or disability questions on a job application? Do you think they in any way affect candidates?

Hey mommas - My baby is 14 weeks old and I haven't gotten my period back yet. I'm worried I'm pregnant again. When did you get your period back? For context, I'm breastfeeding but not exclusively (I am pumping and nursing as much as I can though). I've been on the pill since 6 weeks and my husband used condoms for the first few weeks once we started again. Surprisingly, I can't find anything online that's helpful. Any sense of a timeframe would be tremendously anxiety-reducing!

I would rather be addressed by my name. How can I handle this situation? We are still forming a reltnship & don’t want to hurt that process. I’m Indian.
