We recently started using "family style dining" in my kindergarten classroom. It's been a little challenging because I don't think many students eat at a dinner table with their family at home, but I love the relationships it's forming in my classroom!

What is family style dining? I haven't heard of that term?

Rather than eating in a cafeteria, children and adults eat at the table together. All of the food is put into bowls, children serve themselves and make choices about what to eat, how much to eat, etc.

Our preschools are required to use family style dining. It's also a great time to practice manners, talk about healthy eating. I really enjoy that piece of our daily routine

Be careful not to judge what is or isn't happening at home if you aren't truly sure. If students eat at a table at home or not isn't the issue. There are many standards for how people eat dinner, you have decided to try one style. Offering various settings and food could be one option. Observe which students respond to which settings and adapt accordingly. Good luck! You got this!

I love this idea!

So where does your food come from? Is it student supplied? School supplied?

Anyone else an elementary specialist who gets called to help behavior kids, remove them from their classrooms if being unsafe and supervise them in a “safe room” type of setting? If so, how much of your own teaching are you missing in a typical day and what kinds of support is your district offering you? Right now, I am dealing with behavior kids for 1-4 hours daily (I’m the reading specialist). Almost non-existent support from the district. Just curious what it looked like in other places.

So my ISD split me between a HS and a MS that recently reopened. I'm the only MS band director. The MS decided, without consulting me, to use the band hall as a classroom and after school enrichment "daycare". AKA added desks and tables. How do I approach this? I feel it is not OK in the slightest. I feel the band hall should reflect the goals, discipline, and culture of the program. Not as an empty classroom.

Does it matter what I wear?

My school does not have a/c and my classroom temp hovers around 80-85 when it's about 70 outside.

My usual outfit is khakis, button down shirt over a t shirt, (plus a mask), and I'm sweating all day long. I decided to wear nice khaki shorts and a polo shirt on a really hot day and felt self conscious as soon as I got to school. There's no contract language and I see other teachers dressed like this all the time, but they're female and I'm a male. Should I care?
