“We treat people like people first here so I want to tell you more about the team” Proceeds to walk me through the team chart, when each person joined, when they got married, when they had kids. End presentation, nothing added - no hobbies, no personality quirks, nothing

Was that Michael Scott? If yes, you got a great manager and mentor, lol 😂

???

That’s more than you’d get most other places. Gives you a jumping off point. I personally would not want to have to commit a hobby choice to hr and have new hires ask me about whatever I said years prior.

likefunny

Yup! And those options make more sense than your previously suggested hobbies and quirks 😉

What do they treat people like second?

Shows how we all interpret things differently, I’d have read this as them trying to show that they have a lot of team members with families and lives outside of work and that is welcomed and acknowledged.

Having worked 90 hours a week for a few years, my boss couldn’t even tell you if I had a kid because the team was just work focused not people focused.

I get that. But that’s the only thing he said. And as a single person with no children, it was awkward since I didn’t realize that that was the only thing that made people human on the team: marriage and children.

Hi guys, urgent suggestion regarding feeling overwhelmed at work

I don't know why but lately since the second wave of the pandemic has started, I have been feeling very overwhelmed at work. My manager is mostly a supportive and smart person but due to recent changes in teams his workload has also increased a bit.

I don't know if its work or just the pandemic but sometimes even looking at emails feels dreadful.

How should I talk to him? Please help. He is OOO next week, I need to do distoday

I'm trying to suss out if a new member of our dept hates me or my team (she manages a different team).

My initial take is she's just hard to read and probably a tightly controlled introvert. My direct report felt she's 'cold as ice,' 'bristling' at our suggestions, and forming a clique that wants to do their own thing with no input from our team. He's triggered very easily, and there was no explicit evidence, just a 'vibe' so I wrote it off. (See 1st comment)

“Can we make the drizzle a little more luscious?”

My issue is less with the fact that the word “luscious” is pretty binary. The drizzle is either luscious or it isn’t. My issue is the “a little more” part. So, it’s luscious right now. We want it MORE luscious—but definitely not a lot more, just a little. Otherwise it would be TOO luscious. Can’t have that.

Hi everyone, share your blindsided layoff stories below so I can feel a little bit better about mine.

Covered a managers meeting for her yesterday, was with some senior members of the marketing team. A director opens the call with “we are so sorry about the impacts the layoffs have had on your teams today…” then noticed I was in the call and said “we are still notifying others so best to keep it under the radar” …25% of my team was let go three hours later with no warning😬
