Don’t people help a brother/sister out anymore? Bake her a nice cake or give her a small gift certificate if you the need to but not everything has to be overtly compensated IMO- when the time comes you can return a favor. I grew up with neighbors that now mow my aging parent’s lawn every week, my family does other things in return when possible. Unless your neighbor is looking for money i feel like compensation takes away from the kind neighborly act- at that point you might as well just pay someone for a service.

Totally fine to for you decline a neighbor's offer to pay. But not fine for the neighbor to not even offer/try to pay. Let the other person decline if they feel it's unnecessary.

I would 100% do it for free. Animals are different - plants are like 5 mins of effort. Would not even expect an offer of pay. It’s so weird that anyone wants to get paid to water plants for someone they know.

To be clear - it’s not an implication I have actually done this for 1 neighbor specifically during COVID and 1 neighbor a while back while they were on vacation. One slipped a post-it under my door to ask, we met for coffee & to walk thru the apartment and I was happy to help. The other knocked on my door.
I’d make a dessert and leave it in the fridge, leave some snacks and drinks in the fridge, and leave $100 with a little sticky note that says, “In case the plants don’t behave themselves :) thank you!”
Why add the Starbucks gift card? Just the cash is fine
$20 a day. Easy peasy.
This seems fair, enough to make me get off my couch and go water plants.
If the demographics of apt are better (ie, likely to make decent money), I might do $40/day for the 2 days.
Lives in the building, I’d say $20 total. I would do it for free, but agree that if it’s not a direct friend of yours, you should at least offer it up and they can decide to take it or not. I’d pay more for living animals or if they had to travel to get to you.

Just have dessert, snacks, and booze for the person. That’s enough inventive for me to do any favor for a friend 😜
Just be upfront with the directions and come up with a price. I hate it when people don’t communicate upfront. It’s not even necessarily about the money, I just hate the wishy washy-ness.
Eg: I need you to water 10 plants once a week for 2 weeks. I will pay you xxx for your time. I appreciate you doing this. Do you have any questions?
Agreed! My sister sent me her # to reach out so want to get a price figured out before I do.
I asked a friend to water my plants while we were gone (trying to escape the pandemic in March/April lol what hope and optimism I had). She lived on the same floor in the same building. I offered payment and she refused and then when we got back I gave her some natural sparkling wine!! In another case (before I knew her) I put a FB post up on my local neighborhood site and someone put me in connection with their 14 yo who was fantastic and I venmoed her $10 every time she came
my little sister gets $80/week to take in her neighbors mail/trash cans. she goes every day so a little more than $10/day.
