Well over $10M sold last performance year, $8M managed. $6M managed $7.5 sold so far this year. Supposedly I’m 19 months away from partnership but not sure I want it anymore I’m drained.

SC1, in many places k = thousands, m = millions. If you’re going to be a dick, at least don’t be an uneducated dick.

I can only dream being able to pull this off.

In a similar boat, hang in there. Partnership in one of these firms will transform not only your life but the lives of your children and their children. Keep performing, but manage your own stress and burn. I would start collaborating more with other Senior Managers so they were positioned to help lighten the load now and during your transition to partner.

Good luck and stay strong!

Op - it’s a marathon not a sprint. Focus on attaining peak performance. That means sustainable. Gotta carve time for sleep, exercise, family. Pays endless dividends in the day job (more productive, more focused). Avoids burn out.

likesmart

Oh man, screw the money, life is way too short. If you don’t love it, go find something else to do. I don’t get the whole life changing crap - what good is that if you burnt out.

P2: At least from my friends who are partners - they say that making partner just gets you a bigger hamster wheel 😂

like

Dude if you make partner at 34 then you should aim to retire by 45 - and go and actually do something useful and interesting. Go make up for the 20 years you just lost

OP - you are killing it! I hope you are being recognized for your achievements and agree that you should be working to offload to other team members. Those are great numbers and I hope you are speaking with multiple partners at this point about your trajectory and ongoing performance expectations between now and post partnership.

like

OP - make sure you are working with multiple partners on this; I have seen partners hog glory... also g’luck with the case.. if you make partner, you are safe for 2 years and making 600 ish each year. If it is still this bad, move on ;)

Don’t oversell it...I agree w the inter generational wealth bit assuming you survive - and thrive - 15+ years as a partner...otherwise there’s not enough money in it.

Definitely start curating your team beneath you - you need followership to survive

Entering the partnership at 34 doesn’t mean you’ll be a partner for 25 years.

Not clear on reduction in pension, but at most places it’s ten years and you’re good. Director 1’s advice rings true.
You’re a young person and are obviously deep into it, but for what it’s worth, I’m hopeful that you will eventually come to the realization that there are lots of very attractive options that will present themselves. We just had a service line leader leave for a Senior position at a technology firm. Another star female MD blew off Partner promotion for a sexy job at Oracle, and on and on. The firm wanted to keep both, but they’re not going to change the compensation structure wholesale to keep you. Plus you can always come back, so if you’re vested in your mid forties it’s almost crazy not to take advantage of new opportunities, which, by then, you’ll be hungry for if you’re the kind of person I think you are.
But that’s besides the point. The point is there are lots easier ways to make the same money with less stress and more money with the same. Don’t let the blinders get glued on.

like

P3 is spot on, you will also have down years whether you believe it or not and you will need the mental stamina to pick yourself up and reinvent. Think of other ways to be successful - I would consider it a success if 5-10 people truly credit me for their success at the end of their career and remember me for it. Sales will come and go but it takes a lot of work to have that kind of impact.

And partnership isn’t going to be easy..

Thank you for all the feedback. MC1 loved the advice. I’m very aware that because of my personality I tend to just try and tackle everything(in an inclusive manner) as I love the adrenaline of the hunt and the thrill of the kill plus the need to meet certain numbers to make it. The problem is that it obviously taxes me physically and my family emotionally. When it does I just feel defeated. Because I lack that self control this might not be the business for me. I’m thinking that I’ll hate my first years on the client side but I’ll learn to love the slower pace.

I've heard a couple of things about how the partner pension amount @ PwC is determined, both similar in approach.

Both calculations I have heard of result in an annuity paid until death, at which point a surviving spouse (if any) receives the annuity.

The first calculation I have heard is that you get 80% of your highest earning year as a partner (e.g. If your best year was $1M, you'd get $800k as an annuity).

The second calculation I have heard is that they look at your three highest earning years as a partner, and take the second highest and you get 100% of that. (e.g if your three highest earning years were $1M, $800k, and $1.2M, you'd receive $1M as an annuity).

Is ANY of this true, or just all rumor? Any PwC partners that can chime in and explain the pension plan fact for fact? Perhaps with sample numbers?

Question for B4 PPMD 🐠: what would be some tenets of your approach / experience you would share with someone entering at SM level and aspires to play long and make partner? I understand there isn’t a “formula” or a “playbook” and that the question is purposely open ended, but anything that jumps to mind beyond the obvious would be most helpful. As you can tell, I’m looking for a senior mentor who can share their experience and help avoid some common pitfalls. Thanks in advance 🙏
