To be completely honest I can’t tell if the whole department is slow or if no one wants to work with me and I’m about to be fired.

I hear plenty about this slowdown. Both internally and externally. But for the time being it has passed me by. Lucky or cursed? I cannot decide.

But, the powers that be definitely think it’s real. I am hearing our revenue is going to be up, but only slightly. Any meaningful profitability increase will be on cost side measures / share count management. There are definitely under performing partners that are suddenly pursuing other life alternatives. And several associates that seemed like they had a straight shot to partnership last year that I am being told won’t make it this year. i.e., partnership criteria tightened quickly, which tells you they are managing share count hard (which doesn’t thrill me…I hate that kind of short term outlook, particularly when it comes to elevation decisions).

No slowdown here. It’s intense

Mid market commercial litigation is still super hot. Can’t keep up the work.

I think it’s just cap markets and m&a and maybe ecvc. Certain niche areas like perhaps commercial tech above lol, energy work and litigation depts seem to be going strong.

As independence is heavily scrutinized in audit (and tax/advisory), what types of sidegigs have you seen Big4 firms approve? KPMG uses an example of “teaching a fitness class” in the annual independence confirmation as to what all requires approval (basically any and everything). I’ve dabbled in wedding planning. Is this likely to be approved? Exactly what all information does the firm ask you when you’re seeking approval for a side gig?

I am at a very small firm (<10 attorneys) and am “interviewing” with a larger firm. Considering partner and counsel roles. Beyond compensation structure, billable requirements, and partnership expectations, what questions should I ask? If considering partner position, what is fair to ask about their books?

Excited to be switching from ID to PI. Got a good vibe from the partners and spoke with a current associate who said good things. Then I talked to a colleague who said they’ve heard bad things about the firm. Took the wind right out of my sails. But then I thought any firm will have people saying good and bad things about it, and I’d argue that most gossip about firms, especially second hand, is generally negative. So I’m undeterred and still looking forward to my new position.

So I got 2 offers, 1 at a well-known firm (that I previously worked at, not as an atty) that offered 80K plus full benefits (100% health coverage, PTO, sick days, discretionary bonus & 1800 billable req.) Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. PTO, 1500 billable hours, bonus incentives qrtrly, & 50% health ins. WHY can’t I make a decision? HELP

This may be just a naive/dumb question, but how do you relax when you’ve got a really stressful file? I’m a junior and I’ve been putting in ~10ish billable hours a day recently, which is more than I’m used to. The evenings (post-8pm) are generally my time to decompress - read a book, watch dumb tv, whatever - but it’s been all work lately until 10 or 11pm and I struggle to go straight from work to bed. Trying to fill out my first ever conflicts form and I cannot remember any of my clients at a previous firm. Current firm didn’t need that info when I was hired. Can I ask the old firm’s HR for that info?
