What level are you? If SC or less I'd jump for 30%+ , negotiate based on the salary you'd be making when you're promoted at your current firm. I did that when jumping Big 4s and got a 60% bump. Don't do it for only 20%, your network and rep is way more valuable than you realize.

I would stay, if your goal is to make partner the network you've built over 5 years is really valuable. Did you start as an analyst? 6 years to M is pretty fast. Also, I'd stop worrying about speed, if you try to sprint you'll burn out long before partner...a year or two extra a level can be the difference between being seen as a strong up and comer vs under performer at a higher level. Perception is extremely important to make partner.

like

There is something to be said for a fresh start where you take the lessons learned (eg needing to network & deliver good work) and apply elsewhere. People will have a chance to know the new you without prior prejudice

Make partner. Didn’t focus on network building until recently, Stupidly thinking heads down doing good work was the thing to do. Made connections with some higher up people in my practice. Wouldn’t say those are super strong relationships, but at least they know my name. Concern with leaving is to have to re-learn my way around and rebuild my network. Advice is appreciated

like

Sounds like you are still falling for your flawed mentality of working just one more year to get promoted. I’d start over it’ll force you to network but In all honesty not to be a dick but it sounds like you’d fall back into the same trap.

like

If you are below manager you should jump ship for max compensation

like

The con in my mind is the first year in a new firm will be spent figuring out my way around, network building needs ramp up time as I get to know people. Won’t be too productive. Also, will staying be speeding up time in levels later, eg could it potentially save a year or two from m - sm or sm - p?

like

Do you like Deloitte? Honestly Senior at Deloitte is pretty equivalent to M at EY or KPMG. I wouldn’t jump firms unless you think the new firm is going to provide better career opportunities and or exit options. It’s all about the long game... maxing out your comp in the short term isn’t worth trading off longer term opportunities...

like

Comp is only one part of my consideration, would say it’s the smaller part, title is what I’m more hung up on. To get to partner, you do have to go through all the ranks, so that’s one more year that I can shave off right now right away.

Don’t fall for the banana in the tale pipe!!!! Jump ship. Plus if you leave on good terms, you can always boomerang.

What level are you and how long have you been at Deloitte?

Five and a half years. Currently SC, have two potential offers, would be M in another big 4

What are your views on promotions — should they ALWAYS be driven by the employee (“I want a promotion. How do I make this happen?”) vs. the manager (“I think you’re ready to grow into a new role”)? I recently got a new manager who aligns with my career interests, but both of us are still under my previous manager who treats people as resources. I’m bitter about the upward progress of peers on other teams (w/ better managers), a combo of FOMO + feeling like I’ve failed myself.

Appreciate the transparency they’ve provided but now questioning why I am not at 1.0 index.. any thoughts?
