Went from 50K to 15K in student loan debt over the past 5 years. I’ve been putting every disposable penny into getting out of debt. I’m 31, and my car just fell apart. So now I need to go further into debt buying a new one (I live far from the city with no public transport, so it’s a must to get to the office). Feeling so bummed that I can’t seem to get my head above water

Buy a early to mid-2000s used Honda Civic or Accord for $3-4k. It’ll be reliable enough to get you where you need to go and cost less than anything else to keep on the road. Keep stacking cash against your debt.

Toyotas are cool. They just lost the manual option a whole lot earlier than did Honda. Can’t beat a manual transmission and a clutch for long term reliability and taking all the electronics out of the equation. 👍

You’re down to $15k in student loan debt! Keep up the good work. You’ll get there. And buy a good used car, as has been suggested.

I did the cut costs pay off debt quick then save and invest heavily for a few years. Got tired of it and pivoted to living large and being joyful and dominant… resulted in some promotions and allows me to still save / invest big while living large. Highly recommend once you polish off that 15k.

Note, I’m saying both are possible and it’s not one or the other. Especially once you knock out that debt.

Keep your head up your grinding through the toughest part

Hey all, I am young and looking for advice. I have 100 shares of Lucid Motors, but I am now in the red and fear it could get much worse or even go to 0.

Should I sell the shares, buy a LEAP and move the money elsewhere? This way if the stock does skyrocket I can buy back 100 shares at a cheap price? Plus LEAPS keep a lot of value based solely off the fact that there’s a lot of time left and this is a speculative stock, right?

What’s your early FIRE number? Mine was around $3M for a long time, but now I’m leaning towards $5M. With the potential of raising inflation, taxes, etc. I’m losing confidence that I’d feel comfortable before 50. I’d love to get thoughts/perspectives from the community on how you think about this considering we are in somewhat similar boats considering career pay, family/tax obligations, etc. (eg, what’s your number? Does a paid off home factor into number? How do you think about inheritance?)

Alan David: traditional, no BS, very professional 10/10
Michael Andrews: slightly less value for money, same fabrics, outsourced bespoke, light BS due to flashy showroom 8/10
Enzo Custom: stylish and fashion-forward, good value, in-between M2M and bespoke, flashy in a good way 9/10

Hi! Disclaimer: not an excel genius…

I’m trying to use the lookup function to grab data from a worksheet within the same workbook. I want the column to reference the cost code in one worksheet, find the cost code in the other and display the billed to date associated with it. The problem is that it repeats an amount randomly. There will be multiples then a blank cell in one that I know has a cost associated with it.
Formula=LOOKUP(D3,!Sheet!$D:$D,!Sheet!$H:$H)

Car theft is on rise in my area. I want to put safeguards in my car like gps tracker or anything that's available commercially. I heard phone companies have something that uses their cellphone towers to keep track. Any suggestions on gps trackers or other brand products. I am really worried that due to car shortage and job losses thefts are going to go up. Car dealerships are having wait times of 5-6 months for new cars so any theft would create lot of trouble for our young family.

I have a bunch in a rollover IRA account and have never contributed to a trad IRA (income exceeds Roth limits). Is the back door Roth worth the hassle of rolling an IRA into a 401k and limiting my investment options? Seems that I would at most be able to recharacterize ~5$k/yr…

Term life insurance question - I added the AICPA annual term policy last year. I've noticed personal finance media seems to push 10-20 year term and not discuss annual.

It was considerable cheaper up front and more at the end than 10yr per the fee schedule. If all goes according to plan I'll be at or close to FI within 5-7 years so not sure that I'd keep the full amount past then and would miss the benefit of the cheaper years at the end. Am I missing other risks of not doing 10+ term?
