Went into consulting anticipating more business travel than a previous job (I enjoy travel), then Covid gets in the way...any theories of what travel will look like for consultants in the coming year(s)?

Hopefully 50% travel.....As in ppl like you travel 100% and ppl like me travel 0%

likefunnysmart

Ppl like you/me as in wanting to travel vs not wanting to

funny

Message that's been communicated to me is expect like 50% travel so like a week on and a week off or at least in that ratio so like 2 weeks and 2 weeks etc. But it will range by project. Probably will see some accounts flat out say no travel and some that say they way it was before

like

And those of us blessed on multiple clients it will still be every week 😩

Depends 100% on the client. Clients may or may not be willing to shell out thousands per consultant. It depends if your role specifically needs to be onsite or not. If they believe you can do your work remotely, they might not be keen on having you keep a seat warm onsite. Again, this is just a prediction.

Food for thought, life is a cycle and everything reverts to the mean, yes travel will 100% be back to pre covid levels. May take 5 yrs but it WILL happen.

like

True may not be mean reversion, but planes are already full now, though I understand capacity is less. I never stopped flying, I fully expect it to be back. And if it isn’t in the us, then China will pick up the slack, they’re hiring pilots like crazy and demand is already back.

I don’t know if Travel resumes or not, I just know without the travel and perks that come with it I’m not enjoying consulting as much.

like

I know it sounds like first world problems, but I think there are some folks here who enjoyed the travel aspect and it sucks that Covid has and may continue to shift that lifestyle going forward...until there’s more clarity from public health protocols and whatnot, it feels like business travel FOMO pre-covid to be honest.

I believe that even after it is 100% safe to travel, clients will not be as demanding we be on site as often since they did fairly well with remote consultants, plus saved a lot of money on expenses.

Do you think though that if airlines/hotels somehow get aggressive in trying to promote “deals” for travel, that this will “jumpstart” business travel again with presumed cost savings/bargains for clients?

So I was hired exactly 2 months prior to this covid epidemic and as a result it has made learning how to be a lawyer quite a rollercoaster. I’m trying to learn how things are supposed to be but in all actuality, I’m having to be flexible and figure out how things are working at the moment...which is fine, but it’s hard to predict much of anything when you have nothing to compare it to. Being a law student and interning is nothing compared to practicing. Any advice!?

I don't hate my bank/team but I do feel limited by the bank (since obviously reputation/size dictates the deals the bank can win)

I’m a 2nd year and effectively just ran a deal on my own with the partner. It ran smoothly, I got praise from the partner, and the partner said that they trust me to do most stuff without their sign off (so no need to check with them in future unless I’m really unsure). Generally there is one or two mid levels above me, and I find it way harder to do my job when they are managing me. They like to keep me on the bench, get me to do minor tasks and don’t let me take responsibility and ownership.
