I live 10 min from my parents and it’s hell.
Sometimes a little distance is a good thing so you can build your own life with your partner and your kids without the parents/in-laws trying to control everything.
We lived close to our parents when we had our son. It only took a year and a half from us to move from the east coast to west coast (partners still live in the east coast). It’s not always as pretty as it looks from the outside.

Interesting. In my extended circle of 30+ married friends, only a couple had parental location as a consideration. I mean, sure, if parents happened to be nearby, great, but that was definitely a side effect of career/family choices.
Don’t feel guilty. Having parents help out can come with it’s own set of complications. Also, not everyone’s parents can help them.
Saaaaaame. So many of my friends in NYC have moved back to the Midwest/west coast/south to be nearer at least one set of parents for kid-raising ease. Super envious of them 😭

We moved away from our families as soon as we got married - worked out awesome 😎

I have 3 kids and live pretty close to both sets of grandparents. If you have good relationships with your parents and in-laws, the ability to help with kids is pretty huge, especially for the first few years.
Later on it’s more about the bonding and fun the kids have, which you could replicate with trips.
I grew up nowhere close to any of my parents families due to my dads career. I can’t speak to how that felt to them internally, but my parents raised me perfectly fine and I hold nothing against them for it. I will likely be far away from my and my spouse’s parents when we have kids too as neither lives somewhere that we want to be. Think about it with a sober mind; there’s nothing wrong with wanting to move closer but you can be happy and content not living near your parents too.
