Went to my second restaurant with a charge that stated "covid fee/to -go surcharge" that was 7.5%. As a reference, our food tax is 6.75%. Is anyone ok with this and why?

How many people in here have worked in the food service industry? Just curious.

SSA1 - fair points. I think some sort of system they adds like a 25% service charge that is then mandated to be split among the entire staff would be a better way to go

Nope which is why I cook

I was out of town and likely won't be there again. I also didn't notice it until after I was home with the order. I am not outraged or anything, just wondering if I should be factoring this into my food choices on a regular basis. The fees could certainly add up/impact food budget and I was surprised by it.

To go surcharges were around well before covid

I have never heard of or seen this. If it’s not city or state and it’s a percentage of the price, then they should just raise their prices. Anything else isn’t transparent.

like

My thoughts exactly!!!

It’s for covid supplies and operation costs.

It might also be to supplement pay, as in higher hourly less tip, if many of the to-go orders have low tips.

Went to Miami Beach in May, 20% was added to all restaurant checks regardless of whether you go there by yourself, or you go as part of a group. I checked all receipts before signing the credit card slip, that’s why I didn’t double tip. I think 20% is reasonable, but since 20% is guaranteed now, nobody really cares about service quality. Went to Center City Philly this weekend, and I saw a place add 20% service charge to check. I was not sure if it was a different name for my tip, or if that was not the tip. It was a different name for the tip, I googled it. My friends have all “double tipped” (20%+20%) because they didn’t bother checking the amount. I think 20% is fine, but making the customers double tip in a sneaky way is unethical. That’s why I hate going to a restaurant that does not show the prices on the menu. I am shameless enough to ask the price, because they’re way more shameless to hide the prices in the first place.

@ SSA1, in the e-mail receipt that came from Toast app, it says 20% auto gratuity. If we are not able to safely assume that gratuity will go to servers, there is no point in eating at these places. I cannot do due diligence on whether restaurant owners give 20% ‘auto gratuity’ to servers. In the paper receipts, it said “service charge”. In the e-mail receipt I got, it says 20 percent auto gratuity. Why would I subsidize the restaurant owners if they don’t give auto gratuity to employees? It’s double unethical.

I refuse to do to go orders or use rip offs such as uber eats, etc. I choose to support restaurants and restaurant workers and have done so since the beginning of COVID. When I walk into a restaurant and see a take out station, I assume the in restaurant service will be poor and often leave.

I agree I’d rather eat at a restaurant, but I’m also enjoying that I can get some fantastic takeout from places that would have multi-hour waits for tables or impossible to get reservations.

-also, yes I know its my choice not to order there, but I did not see the charge until I picked up both orders and reviewed the reciepts.. just wondering if this is our new normal.

Restaurants aren’t allowed to keep tips meant for employees. The whole point of the COVID surcharge is that it goes directly to the restaurant’s profits

Was in DC this weekend and several restaurants had a 5% “COVID recovery fee”

like

this could be interpreted as a penalty for tryin to support the businesses. I really don't think I would even mind if they just stated it upfront "temporary covid recovery fee." Could I help? Sure. Would I like to? yes. Would I still tip the staff? yes. however this comes across as we r sneaking in fees since our costs went up. An extra $5 or so won't hurt me but I don't like to be scammed or penalized and this feels like both.

I’m in DC and this is very common for restaurants now. I’m not a fan but I also feel bad for saying that lol

I haven't seen it yet, but we had businesses add a "tax" when the minimum wage increased here.

I really do not understand my company's attendance policy. No sick or personal time and each time you have unscheduled PTO it's considered an occurence. Its super restrictive and during a pandemic you risk people coming to work sick spreading what could potentially be Covid. I just don't get it. I understand they are running a business but it just shows you really don't care about your employees at all but yet you want them to care about this company and the work being done here.

Tired of being shamed by family for the precautions I’m taking to ensure my family, including 2-month-old, are not putting ourselves in any situation that may cause unnecessary risk of contracting covid. Was called selfish for not attending a bday party (ironic), was made to feel bad when I asked family (who had travelled to Florida for fun, gone out to bars/restaurants, etc.) to get tested before coming to see the newborn. Just be respectful of how others are dealing with the pandemic, please!

I have an employee who has been out on Mat leave since beginning of October. She is scheduled to come back beginning of Jan. Today I received an email from our employee asking if she can work the following schedule for the month of Jan: two week 3 days on, two off and then another two 2 days on, 3 off. This is due to COVID and not wanting to put the child in daycare (which I totally get). Not being in a situation like this before, how do I respond?
