As a working mother with two young children, I think this is an insensitive, strange, triggering, and alienating challenge to have done in the workplace. My office does walking challenges - get a team, log your daily 15 minutes, and connect with some people you wouldn't otherwise. The team with the most days walked at the end of the month gets a prize. It centers movement along with team connection. Weight loss cannot be standardized and should not be a competition.
Rewarding people for reducing the size of their bodies is not creative or productive. It also does not account for unhealthy methods used to reduce weight, like food restriction, or true healthful practices, like gaining muscle.
Be careful, if you have folx struggling with eating disorders you may be exacerbating their struggles. Wellness programs should be individualized and can have points and incentives for folx but doing a competition can have extreme negative impacts that could cost more for your health care costs.
Also due to body types and composition, men have the advantage in these competitions and disadvantage women.
I agree with Google1. I think those competitions have a more negative impact on people. Not everybody wants to participate in them, people have their own healthy habits outside of work or not. A weight loss challenge at work is not going to change that for them. And I especially agree with Google1 on having a negative impact on body image. Not a good idea!
Very much discourage this. You can support well being through behaviors (getting enough sleep, active minutes or mindful minutes, drinking water, eating fruits and veggies) without tying to weight. As Google 1 said, you may have people in recovery from or actively struggling with eating disorders.
Would also recommend not implementing this in order to reduce stigma about bodies having to look a certain way in order to be healthy and to not trigger employees who are currently or were previously struggling with eating or body image issues. An alternative could be focusing on mindfulness (like meditation/rest) - Whoop rewards employees with a bonus for getting 8+ hours of sleep per night. You could maybe do a competition to encourage outdoor activity in whichever form it may be preferred (like counting steps, or counting minutes doing some sort of outdoor yoga, running, meditation, etc).
