We’re working on updating the dress code in my office. The idea is to be less strict about the team's attire and just be “professional”? Any thoughts? How do you define professionalism?

Probably easier to define what ISN'T acceptable. E.g. no jeans, flip flops, tank tops, etc.

like

That is a good point, it would be an easier point to get across

Ask yourself, how necessary is the dress code? What is it about the company that requires everyone to be extremely professionally dressed? Obviously I don’t know what type of business it is to comment on that but I’d be interested in the criteria that make it necessary to dress professionally. I worked at a company where our dress code was “Dress for your day.” Did you have meetings with upper management that day? Ok then put yourself together and look decent. If you knew it was a day few people would be in the office (we had a hybrid work model) then be comfortable in jeans. Maybe yours is “Dress business professional or business casual.” Not going down to the point of being straight up casual.

I can appreciate the spot you’re in. I’d personally tell it to them like this. You dress for the role you have. If you’re in the field, you wear a uniform. If you’re in the office, you don’t. No, it’s not fair. Life isn’t “fair.” Assuming you’re employing all adults they should already be aware of this.

It’s not fair CEO’s make quadruple the salaries of managers but sometimes all they do is delegate the work. But that’s the way it works sometimes. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t say this flippantly, it’s been a hard lesson for me to learn over the years but it’s an important one for everyone to come to terms with. And if there’s something you don’t like about your job; negotiate, job search, or change your attitude.

I’m so glad I don’t and will never work In an office again. There is no definitive landing point and it’s sure to bring about conflict. I once worked at a place where I was yelled
at for having an accidental pen ink stain on my dress shirt. I’m sure as an HR manager the new template has to be VERY carefully worded.

like

Wow, that is extreme. Our current guidelines state that clothing must be clean and free of stains but is more because techs get super dirty and won't wash their uniforms without being told.

I would also add images of this how we dress at work vs hoe we don’t dress. I would also revisit this image during election season. I would have policy on not illustrating political statements if you want the company to be neutral. Good luck! Sending positive karma your way!

Yes, I do think using imagery is the best way to demonstrate what is and isn't okay to wear for work

Professionalism means you know how to be presentable. It does not really mean that an employee should overdress or wear branded clothes. As long you look presentable and decent, you are all good.

I know junior associates feel the pain of being micromanaged and told exactly what to do all the time, but honestly, enjoy it while it lasts. It’s a whole new kind of pain when the partner ignores all your emails, never forwards you or copies you to keep you in the loop, never tells you what to do, and still gets mad at you when you are “behind”, or “get it wrong” or ask client/other side for something that partner got 3 weeks ago but never forwarded to you. 😂😭

Sort of a silly question, but I’m curious about team dinners. How often do they occur on a project with travel? Weekly? 2-3 per week?

Also, are they always at the highest end restaurants (especially in the big cities)? I had a friend tell me that the Partner on their case looks for “the most extravagant restaurant possible” for team dinners.

Incoming BA/A/AC and this was just an interesting question that popped into my head.

How should I deal with a problematic supervisor? They are nitpicking on even quality work. And often, I’m getting the blame for not identifying other paralegals mistakes, when (from what I can see), the other paralegals simply get told “ohh it’s okay don’t worry”.

Should I raise this as I’m concerned about the impression my manager is leaving on the partners or will I be considered as someone who can’t deal with criticism?

My lawyer had advised me not to speak on my situation at first but is now saying I could share something if I wanted to. Mid level atty in a fast moving case. Earlier this year jrs brought on the team to help lessen work flow. Both partner and I delegate certain tasks, esp when we’re super busy. Junior goofed regarding deadlines (which I had to ask for twice); now partner is stressed, tho we should be able to lock in an extension. Jr took ownership of the slip up. I owned that I should have checked his work, but I feel that I hurt my rep. w partner. What to do? Lay low? Not a fan of throwing ppl under bus.

Hey all, new to this bowl. Currently a Tech Recruiter and eventually want to make the transition into a HRBP or HR Generalist role. Would love to hear from anyone who started in recruiting then transitioned into another area of HR. Have been thinking of either working on PHR certification or MBA with focus in HR mgt. Thanks!

Interested to see some perspectives - currently working at a Payroll & Benefits Specialist at a fast growing company and recently passed my PHR! I just started this role only a few months ago but am already feeling like I can take on more, but not as much as a HR manager. I’m struggling to understand where exactly it is I can go from here. I’m 25, have 3 years of experience, and get paid $59k/year.

Where does one go from here? Thanks in advance for any and all answers!
